Appearing in the very first Super Mario Bros. on the NES in 1985 , it is often the first opponent that players encounter. Although weak and easy to defeat, the Goomba has become a symbol of the Mario universe, just like the green pipes or the "?" blocks.

Its appearance—a brown mushroom with frowning eyebrows —and the mechanic of jumping as its main attack have left their mark on platforming history.
