The island's first real region — and FLUDD's first proper workout. Bianco Hills, Collines Bianco in French, is a countryside of windmills and Piantas at the foot of Corona Mountain, unlocked right after Delfino Plaza. This guide walks through its eight episodes, its lake, its village and Petey Piranha, the boss you fight there twice.

The Bianco Hills (Collines Bianco in French) are the first major region Mario unlocks on Isle Delfino, right after the Delfino Plaza tutorial: a rolling countryside of windmills and Piantas, watched over in the distance by Corona Mountain.

It is here, in Super Mario Sunshine (GameCube, 2002), that FLUDD finally reveals everything it can do against the pollution eating away at the island.

The first real level after Delfino Plaza

Once Delfino Plaza is clean and the first Shine Sprite collected, the gateway to Bianco Hills opens: this is the game's very first full-fledged level, reached through a statue on the plaza.

The setting trades the city's cobblestones for a rolling countryside bathed in sunlight, where the green grass clashes with the patches of goop waiting to be scrubbed away. This is the player's true training ground, the one that lays the groundwork before the trickier levels.

Windmills, a lake and a Pianta village

The Bianco Hills landscape is instantly recognizable by its windmills turning in the sea breeze. Around them, a handful of landmarks shape the whole region:

  • The Big Windmill, a huge structure standing in the middle of the lake, serves as the central landmark and as the goal to reach from the very first episode.
  • The Windmill Village, a hamlet of round houses that is home to the Piantas, Isle Delfino's leafy-headed natives.
  • A big lake choked with pollution, whose secrets you have to uncover below the surface.
  • A network of caves carved into the hillside and beneath the water, hiding Shine Sprites and red coins.

The big windmill is the landmark: the whole level is built around it and its lake.

FLUDD finally gets to work

Bianco Hills is the first place where FLUDD — the Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device, the water pack Mario wears on his back — shows just how useful it is. Here you learn to aim, spray and rinse away the goop that coats the ground and the enemies alike.

Episode 1 ends with a first mini-boss: Polluted Piranha, a huge living puddle of goop you have to pump full of water until it dries up. The perfect reward after the long climb to the Big Windmill.

Petey Piranha, the boss you fight twice

The star of the level is Petey Piranha , a gigantic winged Piranha Plant that lords over the top of the Big Windmill. You face him twice: first in Episode 2, then again in Episode 5.

The method never changes: spray water into his mouth when he opens it, bloating him with water, then jump on his belly to flatten him. That double duel makes Petey Piranha the signature recurring boss of Bianco Hills, right in the shadow of Corona Mountain.

Eight episodes to clean it all up

Like every major region in Super Mario Sunshine, Bianco Hills has eight episodes of its own, unlocked as you progress and gather Shine Sprites.

  • Cleaning up the goop flows and the first climb to the Big Windmill kick things off.
  • The caves in the hillside and the lake hide secret passages and well-buried Shine Sprites.
  • Hunts for red coins, both in the village and at the bottom of the lake.
  • The chase after Shadow Mario, the bluish impostor who steals Mario's likeness and tears across the level at full speed.

Why Bianco Hills sticks in your memory

As the game's first real region, Bianco Hills sets the bright, summery tone of all Super Mario Sunshine: vivid colors, a glittering sea and water mechanics at the heart of the gameplay.

The Corona Mountain rising on the horizon is a constant reminder of the volcanic threat hanging over the island, turning this peaceful countryside into an unforgettable starting point for Mario's adventure.
