The Very First Boss of Super Mario Galaxy

You then need to hit the tail again: with the next blow, Dino Piranha goes into a wild rage, his head turns bright red, and he starts pursuing you much faster around the small celestial body.

Keep your cool, bypass him, and land two more precise hits on his tail. With the last impact, he collapses, lets out a piercing cry, and disappears in a cloud of purple smoke, releasing a Star—the reward that opens the rest of the adventure.

Fiery Dino Piranha: The Incandescent Version

Later in the game, Dino Piranha returns in a much more menacing form: the Fiery Dino Piranha. You confront him in the lava galaxy of the Melty Molten Galaxy.

This variant swaps purple for a black head mottled with dark red and a body surrounded by flames that leaves a trail of fire in its wake. Its Japanese name, くろディノパックン (Kuro Dino Pakkun), literally means "black Dino Pakkun".

The principle of the fight remains identical—break the shell, then hit the tail—but the beast now spits fireballs, making each dodge much more perilous. In essence, it's a "spicier" reinterpretation of the very first confrontation, designed for already seasoned players.

The Grand Return in Super Mario Galaxy 2

Three years later, Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010) offers Dino Piranha a triumphant comeback in a special galaxy: Boss Blitz Galaxy, unlocked in World S once 100 Stars are collected.

The principle? Re-confront five notable bosses from the first episode in a row, without any downtime. And guess who kicks off the show: Dino Piranha, true to its status as the very first adversary. Even better, its fiery version, the Fiery Dino Piranha, closes the series in fifth and last position—a nice nod that makes the creature the two bookends of this gauntlet.
