Dino Piranha belongs to the wide family of Piranha Plants, those carnivorous flowers so emblematic of the Mario universe. But this one has plenty to surprise you: its head borrows the features of Petey Piranha , the hulking Piranha Plant boss, grafted onto a dinosaur body with stocky legs and a long tail.

At rest, its head sports a purple hue speckled with white spots. The most recognizable detail remains the club at the end of its tail, a big brown ball that will play a central role in the fight.

Its Japanese name, ディノパックン (Dino Pakkun), combines “dino” and “Pakkun”, the Japanese term for Piranha Plants. In other words, right from its original name the character fully embraces its double nature, plant and reptile. The very first boss of Super Mario Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy was released in 2007 on Wii (November 1 in Japan, November 16 in Europe). After the tutorial of the Gateway Galaxy, the game hurls you into its first big explorable galaxy: the Good Egg Galaxy.

It is there, right in the opening mission, that Dino Piranha stands in your way. That earns him a place apart: the first true boss that Mario faces, long before running into Bowser. His role is almost educational — he teaches the player to master the game's signature attack.

How to defeat Dino Piranha

The whole fight rests on a single mechanic: the spin attack (the famous “spin” of Super Mario Galaxy). No point jumping on him; his tail is what you have to aim at, sending the ball straight back into him.

A first spin on the tail ball hurls it against the shell and smashes it to pieces, finally revealing the beast's head. You then have to strike the tail again: on the next hit, Dino Piranha flies into a wild rage, his head turns bright red and he starts chasing you around the little planetoid far faster.

Keep your cool, circle around him and land two more precise hits on his tail. On the last impact he collapses, lets out a shrill cry and vanishes in a cloud of purple smoke, releasing a Star — the reward that opens up the rest of the adventure.

Fiery Dino Piranha: the blazing version

Later in the game, Dino Piranha comes back in a far more threatening form: the Fiery Dino Piranha . You take him on in the lava galaxy, Melty Molten Galaxy.

This variant swaps the purple for a black head speckled with dark red and a body wreathed in flames that leaves a trail of fire in its wake. Its Japanese name, くろディノパックン (Kuro Dino Pakkun), literally means “black Dino Pakkun”.

The principle of the fight stays the same — break the shell, then strike the tail — but the beast now spits fireballs, which makes every dodge far more perilous. In short, it's a “spiced-up” rerun of the very first showdown, designed for players who already know the ropes.

Three years later, Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010) gives Dino Piranha a triumphant encore in a special galaxy: Boss Blitz Galaxy, unlocked in World S once you have gathered 100 Stars.
