It grants no power at all: it transforms the entire level. The Wonder Flower is the trigger item at the very heart of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, released on October 20, 2023. This guide explains the Wonder Effect that turns a level upside down, the cases where it also transforms the heroes, and the role Wonder Seeds play in progression.

In 2023, Super Mario Bros. Wonder shook up forty years of 2D platforming with a brand-new item: the Wonder Flower (Wonder Flower in English). Where the Super Mushroom or the Fire Flower grant the plumber a personal power, the Wonder Flower does not stop at transforming the hero: it reshapes the entire level.

Hidden away in every main level, it triggers a Wonder Effect as unpredictable as it is spectacular: Warp Pipes that come alive, gravity flipped on its head, Mario turned into a Goomba... A closer look at the signature item that redefined level design in the modern 2D Mario.

What is the Wonder Flower?

The Wonder Flower is a collectible item introduced in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, released worldwide simultaneously on October 20, 2023. The adventure unfolds in a kingdom neighbouring the Mushroom Kingdom, ruled by a young caterpillar prince. The spark that sets the plot going? Bowser gets hold of a Wonder Flower, touches it and literally merges with the prince's castle, spreading chaos everywhere.

Unlike a classic power-up, the Wonder Flower grants no lasting ability. It is a trigger: every main level hides just one, and its colour changes with the world you are crossing (blue, cyan, yellow, green, purple...). Grabbing it instantly tips the level into an altered state, the Wonder Effect, which lasts for the length of one sequence before everything returns to normal.

The Wonder Effect: the level turned upside down

Touching the Wonder Flower sets off a Wonder Effect, the very heart of Wonder's identity. No two effects are alike from one level to the next, and they fall into a few broad families:

  • Environment upheavals: Warp Pipes that ripple, bend or crawl forward like caterpillars, reversed gravity, a level that tilts and sends objects rolling, areas that flood or dry up.
  • Invasions and multiplications: hordes of enemies pouring in, characters and creatures stretched or warped out of shape.
  • Shifts in perspective: a switch to a top-down view, a free fall by parachute, sequences where you walk on the walls.
  • Musical effects: coins that dance and platforms that move in time with the soundtrack.

Non-playable characters, the Talking Flowers , comment live on all this upheaval and sometimes drop precious hints.

The level rewrites itself under the player's feet for as long as the effect lasts.

When the Wonder Flower transforms the heroes

Some Wonder Effects leave the scenery alone and go straight for the character. The Wonder Flower can then transform Mario and his companions into creatures with completely new rules of play:

  • Goomba Mario: stripped of his big jump, the hero has to sneak quietly past the enemies.
  • Spike Ball: a bristling sphere that rolls at full speed and smashes every block in its path.
  • Balloon: an inflated shape that drifts gently up into the air.
  • Metal form, bouncing or rubbery shapes: so many variations that force you to relearn how to move.

These transformations apply to the whole playable cast, from Luigi to Peach by way of Yoshi and Toadette, and have nothing to do with the Elephant Fruit or the Bubble Flower, which are, for their part, true permanent power-ups.

Wonder Flower and Wonder Seed: the engine of progression

The Wonder Flower forms an inseparable duo with the Wonder Seed (Wonder Seed). As soon as the Wonder Effect kicks in, a new goal appears: reach the Wonder Seed, and collecting it puts an end to the effect and rewards the player. These seeds, more than 200 of them in the game, are the key to progression: they feed the energy that opens up new levels and new worlds.

The Wonder Effect can also end in other ways: if the character is defeated, if he reaches the goal pole, or if he leaves the area without grabbing the seed. Every level therefore offers a neat little rhythmic loop: explore, trigger the effect, race for the reward.

Behind the scenes: over 2000 Wonder Effect ideas

The creative scope of the Wonder Flower comes down to how it was born. Under the guidance of director Shiro Mouri and producer Takashi Tezuka, the team was invited to pitch Wonder Effect ideas with no regard for hierarchy. The result: a little over 2000 suggestions gathered, of which only a fraction made the cut.

Tezuka's philosophy sums up the spirit of the concept: rather than teleporting the player to another area, why not transform the very place he is already standing in? Some of the discarded ideas, revealed at a developer conference, went a very long way indeed, like that giant pixelated head that had to be kept balanced. The Wonder Flower thus became the testing lab that made Wonder the most surprising 2D Mario in the series.

FAQ

  • Is the Wonder Flower a power-up like the Fire Flower?
No. The Fire Flower and the Super Mushroom give the character a lasting power. The Wonder Flower, on the other hand, grants no permanent ability: it triggers a temporary Wonder Effect that transforms the level, then everything returns to normal.
  • How many Wonder Flowers are there in Super Mario Bros. Wonder?
Every main level hides exactly one. Its colour varies with the world you are crossing. Touching it is optional to finish a level, but essential to collect certain Wonder Seeds.
  • What is the difference between the Wonder Flower and the Wonder Seed?
The Wonder Flower triggers the Wonder Effect; the Wonder Seed puts an end to it once you collect it. The Wonder Seeds, more than 200 in the game, are used to unlock worlds and levels.
  • How does a Wonder Effect end?
Most often by grabbing the Wonder Seed. It also ends if the character is defeated, reaches the goal pole, or leaves the area without having picked up the seed.
  • Does the Wonder Flower appear anywhere other than in Wonder?
Yes, as a knowing nod: it has been the focus of events in Super Mario Run, appears as a spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and shows up again as a reference in more recent titles such as Mario Kart World.
