Who is Knucklotec?

The colossus known as Knucklotec is an ancient stone deity once worshipped by the people of Tostarena, the desert town of the Sand Kingdom. Time has stripped him down to the essentials: a colossal head flanked by two floating hands, the rest of his body long since gone.

His massive face is a direct nod to the colossal Olmec heads of Central America, an open wink at the kingdom's Mexican inspiration. Long imprisoned in ice deep in the ruins, he wakes furious when Mario ventures into his lair.

In fact, the whole kingdom is steeped in a Mexican atmosphere: festive skeletons, cacti and calaveras all evoke the Día de los Muertos. In the story, the colossus wrongly believes that Mario has stolen the sacred ring he was guarding — a giant jewel-encrusted wedding ornament (the “ Binding Band ” in the original version) that Bowser actually stole for his forced wedding to Peach.

Where and when to face him in the Sand Kingdom

You run into Knucklotec in the Sand Kingdom, one of the first major kingdoms you visit in Super Mario Odyssey, released on Nintendo Switch on October 27, 2017 worldwide.

Before reaching him, Mario has to push back Bowser's hat-wearing minions and watch a huge inverted pyramid rise into the sky, revealing the icy chasm that leads down to the colossus. The fight itself takes place deep in the frozen underground of the kingdom, in an icy arena raised above a lake of ice. That freezing setting is exactly what explains the presence of the ice stalactites, which are essential to the fight.

Beating him does more than unlock the rest of the adventure: his fall melts the ice and restores the kingdom's original desert heat , permanently transforming places you can then go back and explore at your leisure.

How to beat Knucklotec

The duel rests entirely on the capture power of Cappy. There is no way to hit the giant's face directly: you have to turn his own frozen fists against him. Here's how it unfolds:

  • The boss hammers the ground with his two fists and each impact sends down icicles that plant themselves in the arena.
  • When a fist smashes into an icicle, it ends up frozen and stunned for a few seconds.
  • Mario then throws Cappy to capture the fist while it's immobilized, then hurls it like a Bullet Bill straight into the colossus's face.
  • Repeat the process: three direct hits are enough to bring the guardian down.

As the fight goes on, Knucklotec speeds up his attacks: hands skimming across the floor and a fearsome pincer attack in which both fists try to crush Mario. So you need to keep moving nonstop and watch for the right moment. Once beaten, he explodes and releases a Multi Moon, a reward worth several Power Moons at once.

Grand Caputl, Knucklotec, Faustezuma: a name that travels

The French name Grand Caputl is a little gem of localization: it pairs the French adjective “Grand” with the Latin caput (“head”), rounded off with the Nahuatl suffix -tl, the language of the Aztecs. A clever blend that fits this giant head of pre-Columbian inspiration.

The original English name, Knucklotec, melds “ knuckle ” (the joint of the fist) with the Olmec and Aztec civilizations. The German Faustezuma pushes the reference further by marrying “Faust” (fist) with the emperor Moctezuma.

In Japan, the colossus goes by the name アッチーニャ神 (Atchīnya-shin), literally the “ god of Tostarena ”, since the town is called Atchīnya over there. Every language plays its own variation on the same Mesoamerican theme.

But Knucklotec isn't just a passing boss. You meet him again later in the Mushroom Kingdom, where he replays his fight in a tougher version, backed this time by waves of enemies springing out of the ground.

Sharp-eyed players have also noticed that he normally sports an ice headdress evoking a ceremonial ornament, a detail that reinforces his status as a fallen deity. His silhouette — a stone guardian in the heart of a desert — also recalls a classic boss from Super Mario 64: Eyerok, another mineral colossus lurking in the sands.
