On the beaches of Isle Delfino prowls a sprinter with a frozen mask: Il Piantissimo, the fastest runner in Super Mario Sunshine. Disguised as a Pianta from head to toe, he pops up on the sand to throw Mario a very simple challenge: a race to the flag.

A sprinter out of nowhere

Il Piantissimo shows up in Super Mario Sunshine (GameCube, 2002). You cannot miss him: athletic silhouette, blue costume skin, leaf skirt, palm tree on the head and above all a rigid mask with a frozen smile, which mimics a Pianta's face without ever fooling anyone.

His name completes the picture: “Il Piantissimo”, a made-up Italian superlative you could translate as “the most Pianta of all” — a borrowed identity claimed right down to the surname. In Japan, he goes by the far more prosaic name of Monteman.

Three races, three beaches, one flag

The ritual never changes: Il Piantissimo waits for Mario near a sign, taunts him, then bolts towards a flag planted at the far end of the level. His challenges punctuate three corners of the island:

• At Gelato Beach, on the scorching sand of the mirror beach.
• At Noki Bay, between cliffs and waterfalls.
• At Pianta Village, beneath the giant mushrooms at dusk.

The fellow is genuinely fast: without a clean line and clever use of your jumps — or even of F.L.U.D.D. —, the race is lost before it starts. Every win earns a Shine Sprite.

A disguise that fools nobody

Il Piantissimo's costume is a delight of irony: it apes the Piantas, the good-natured giants of the island, but everything gives him away. His build is slim and wiry where real Piantas are broad and pot-bellied; his mask is obviously rigid; and around his eyes you can make out very real pale skin that has nothing in common with the islanders' hide.

The locals, for their part, do not seem to mind: the runner is part of the scenery, like an overenthusiastic tourist nobody bothers questioning any more. That gap between how obvious the disguise is and the general indifference is what makes the character so funny.
