Luigi under hypnosis: the birth of Mr. L

In Super Paper Mario (Wii, released in 2007), Luigi tries to stop Count Bleck (Comte Niark in French) from carrying out his plan to destroy every world. But the green plumber is captured in Castle Bleck and handed over to Nastasia, the count's devoted secretary.

With a simple power of mind control, Nastasia erases Luigi's shyness and turns him into Mr. L. The unassuming hero becomes a self-assured villain who remembers neither his past nor his brother Mario.

That switch makes Mr. L a one-of-a-kind case in the saga: a beloved hero turned villain, without the slightest awareness of it.

The Green Thunder: a personality opposite to Luigi's

Where Luigi is fearful and self-effacing, Mr. L proudly proclaims himself “the Green Thunder” (“le Tonnerre vert” in the French version), a theatrical, boastful daredevil who loves putting on a show.

  • Arrogance: he challenges the heroes with flair and simply believes himself invincible.
  • Signature lines: his famous “L-ater!” (an English pun on “later”) and his “Have at you!” punctuate every appearance.
  • The mask: a black domino mask hides his face, even though everyone recognizes Luigi instantly.

That comic contrast makes Mr. L one of the comedic highlights most enjoyed in the whole adventure.

Brobot: the minion's mechanical genius

Mr. L is not just a braggart: he reveals a real talent for engineering. He builds and pilots a giant robot made in his own image, the Brobot (Frérobot in the French version), a battle machine deployed in space.

In the first direct showdown, Mr. L has 40 HP. Once beaten, he refuses to admit defeat and immediately summons his Brobot to resume the duel.

Later he comes back with an upgraded version of his own design, the Brobot L-type (Frérobot Type-L in French), fitted with arms and legs capable of ranged attacks. Those mechanical fights rank among the most spectacular bosses in the game.

In the service of Count Bleck

Mr. L joins the inner circle of Count Bleck's loyal followers, alongside O'Chunks (Mc Astagne in French), Mimi, Dimentio and Nastasia, tasked with carrying out the count's dirty work.

His mission: slow down Mario and his allies so the count can complete his dark project of erasing every world. Unlike the other minions, Mr. L has no idea that he is really fighting his own brother.

That tragic irony gives the character all his depth: the villain's right-hand man is nothing but a hero manipulated against his will.

Redemption: when Dimentio breaks the spell

Paradoxically, it is Dimentio (Dimensio in French), another of the count's minions, who puts an end to Mr. L's ordeal. By eliminating him, the jester undoes Nastasia's hypnosis and gives Luigi his identity back.

Mind the nuance: Dimentio is not acting out of kindness. He intends to use Luigi as a pawn in his own machiavellian scheme, far more dangerous than the count's own.

Back to his old self, Luigi finds Mario again and joins the heroes' side. Mr. L will have been nothing more than a forced detour in the green plumber's life.

Why Mr. L became a cult favorite

Despite being a secondary boss, Mr. L remains one of the most memorable characters in the Paper Mario series.
