Toadsworth is presented as Princess Peach's personal attendant and butler. He is no ordinary servant: official material states that he has looked after the princess since she was very young, in the manner of a guardian or a private tutor.

His role has long caused confusion. Some fan rumors imagined him as Peach's father or grandfather, but the physical differences and the subordinate status attributed to him make that theory unlikely. Above all, he would be the one who raised and educated the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, while remaining in her service.

Toadsworth makes his very first appearance in Super Mario Sunshine, released on GameCube on 4 October 2002 in Europe (19 July 2002 in Japan). He joins Mario and Peach on their holiday to Isle Delfino, where the trip turns into a nightmare the moment they land.

He is not playable there: he acts as a support character who comments on the action and worries about the princess. Before him, very similar characters already filled that role of elderly adviser, such as the Chancellor in Super Mario RPG, but Toadsworth is the first to carry this lasting name and identity.

His role grows in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (Partners in Time), released in Europe in 2006 on Nintendo DS. The game introduces his younger counterpart, nicknamed Toadsworth the Younger, whom you meet thanks to time travel.

This younger version sports a red jacket and a brown mustache, and wears neither glasses nor cane. Charged with watching over Baby Peach, he teams up with his future self to teach the Mario Bros. new techniques, such as the Spin Jump, all while trying to keep the baby entertained.

While Toadsworth stays a bit player in the main adventures, the spin-offs finally hand him the spotlight. He becomes playable in several sports and party titles:
