On the surface, a blinding blizzard; under the ice, a whole city. Known as the Snow Kingdom, this frozen land hides Shiveria Town beneath the ice. This guide covers the Shiverians, the bouncing seal folk who live there, the Bound Bowl Grand Prix where you have to bounce to win, and the showdown with Rango, the Broodal with the double hat.

Welcome to the Snow Kingdom (Pays des Neiges in French), one of the lands in Super Mario Odyssey (2017). On the surface it offers nothing but a blinding blizzard; but its true face hides beneath the ice.

It is there, in a city buried under the ice, that the Shiverians live, and where the kingdom's famous great bouncing race is run.

Shiveria Town, a city hidden under the ice

At first glance, the Snow Kingdom is just a frozen plain swept by a permanent blizzard, where visibility drops to a few metres. It is a decoy: the kingdom's real life unfolds beneath your feet.

Mario finds a giant well hidden under the snow, right by the checkpoint flag. Let yourself drop and you land in Shiveria Town (Flocons-en-Flonflonnie in French), a cave city carved straight into the ice. The contrast is striking: sheltered from the storm, the town is peaceful, colourful and teeming with life.

That underground architecture of pale wood, with the look of a Nordic village, shields the locals from the biting cold. The Bound Bowl Grand Prix, the beating heart of the city, is closed at first: it falls to Mario to reopen the track.

The Shiverians, bouncing seals of the ice field

The kingdom's residents are the Shiverians (Flonflons), small round creatures that call to mind seals or sea lions, bundled up in thick hats and scarves.

Do not be fooled by their good-natured look: the Shiverians are famous for their extraordinary physical toughness. Their bodies bounce off the ground and the walls like a rubber ball, a knack no other creature in the game shares.

That very sturdiness is what makes them the only competitors allowed in the great local race. Their French name is a mischievous wink: in France, “ flonflons ” means the blaring oompah music of village dances and funfairs — in other words, a merry, festive people.

The Bound Bowl Grand Prix: bounce to win

The kingdom's big event is the Bound Bowl Grand Prix (Grand Prix flonflon in French), a bouncing race like no other.

To enter, Mario has to capture a Shiverian with the help of Cappy, then line up at the start. The rule sounds simple: finish three laps of the snowy course in the lead, bouncing without a break.

It all comes down to timing: pressing the button exactly as you hit the ground triggers a stronger bounce and a burst of speed, while the angle you land at decides the next trajectory. Mistime it and you flop; nail it and you leave the pack behind.

The traditional trophy is the Frost-Frosted Cake (délice de neige in French), a frosted tiered cake made by the Shiverian Elder, the forefather of the tribe, and much prized for weddings. One small snag: Bowser has made off with the cake for his own wedding. By way of compensation, the Elder hands Mario a Multi Moon for his victory.

Rango, the Broodal with the double hat

The Snow Kingdom also hosts a boss fight against Rango, one of the Broodals, the rabbit crew in charge of arranging Bowser's wedding.

This is your second encounter with this bowler-hatted hare, after a first duel in the Lake Kingdom (Pays du Lac in French). Rango has done his homework: he no longer throws a single slicing hat, but two at once, and dives inside them faster.

The duel plays out in an ice arena: you dodge the hats as they boomerang back, then jump on Rango when he gets stuck in his own headgear. Worth noting, beating Rango earns a Power Moon on the very first visit.

Rango turns his double hat into a throwing weapon — the only Broodal you fight on ice.

A fantasy Siberia: nesting dolls and the Hopak

The Snow Kingdom is a whimsical take on Siberia and Russia. The clue sits in the English name: “ Shiveria ” blends “ shiver ” (to tremble with cold) and “ Siberia ”.

Cultural references abound. The local Crazy Cap shop sells nesting dolls (the famous Russian matryoshkas), and you can catch Shiverians performing the Hopak, the Slavic dance with its energetic squat kicks.

Everything, from the buried wintry aesthetic to the locals' heavy clothing, cultivates that frozen far north feel, tempered by the easy warmth of life underground.

55 Power Moons under the snow

Like every land in Odyssey, the Snow Kingdom is packed with Power Moons, the fuel that gets the Odyssey flying again.

In all, the kingdom holds 55 Power Moons: the ones you find while exploring, the race's Multi Moon, the hidden challenges and the two moons sold at Crazy Cap. Far more than the quota needed to head off to the next land.

Many are hidden outside the city: in the frozen nooks of the surface, under the ice, or by coming back once Bowser has been beaten. So the kingdom gets rediscovered over several visits, storm or no storm.
