A kingdom entirely devoted to fashion

The Lake Kingdom is built around a vast lake whose shimmering waters shelter an entire civilization of seamstresses. Its inhabitants, the Lochladies (the Robelaises in the French version), are reputed to be peerless designers: local legend credits them with extraordinary suppleness, able to plunge their creations into the depths to make them shine.

Unlike the lush or desert kingdoms surrounding it, here everything gravitates around the fashion show and the wedding dress. The scenery itself borrows that vocabulary: rocks carved like draped fabric, lights cut out in the manner of lace. The kingdom thus ranks among the rare spots in Odyssey where elegance clearly wins out over raw adventure, giving it an instantly recognizable identity.

The Water Plaza, a city under a glass dome

The heart of the kingdom is an underwater city resting on the lake bed: the Water Plaza (Dôme du Lac in French). It is a huge glass bubble filled with air, where Mario breathes without the slightest trouble despite the mass of water hanging above his head. The effect is striking: you stroll around bone dry, surrounded by fish and bluish reflections.

Its architecture marries Greek-inspired colonnades with couture refinement, like a temple devoted to fashion. At its center, an exhibition hall showcases the kingdom's crown jewel. A wide terrace crowns the dome: this is where the visit's decisive showdown plays out. And through the glass, you regularly glimpse a silhouette gliding through the water, a detail that sets the site's mysterious mood right away.

The Lochlady Dress, a stolen national treasure

The kingdom's treasure is the Lochlady Dress (Robe de nacre in French), billed as the most luxurious outfit ever made by the Lochladies. Only the most flawless dress earns a place in the Water Plaza's hall: a supreme honor reserved for its creators, proof of all their craftsmanship.

The game's tourist brochure even credits it with a power: wearing this dress is said to bring eternal happiness, so every bride dreams of it. The catch: Mario has barely arrived when the Broodals — those rabbits tasked with arranging the forced wedding of Bowser and Princess Peach — snatch the precious garment to hand it to the reluctant bride. Recovering the Lochlady Dress becomes the kingdom's central objective from then on.

Dorrie, a nod to the Loch Ness Monster

The creature that swims peacefully in the lake is called Dorrie. This big long-necked animal is a plesiosaur, an unabashed copy of Scotland's famous Loch Ness Monster . In Super Mario Odyssey, she even sports a top hat clamped onto her head, perfectly in keeping with the kingdom's fashion theme.

This is not her first appearance in the series: Dorrie has been around since Super Mario 64 (1996 in Japan), where the creature lived in the underground lake of Hazy Maze Cave and already served as Mario's mount. She also turns up in New Super Mario Bros. on DS. In Odyssey, you can once again climb onto her back to cross the waters and reach nooks that are otherwise out of reach, a nostalgic wink to long-time players.

Rango, the Broodal bouncer on the terrace

The boss of the Lake Kingdom is Rango, one of the four Broodals. Tall, lanky and sporting suspenders, he serves as the bouncer of the crew. He is the one who got his hands on the Lochlady Dress, and Mario tracks him down on the Water Plaza terrace to force him to hand back his loot.

His weapon is his spiked hat, which he hurls like a boomerang. The counter is to throw Cappy at the headgear to flip it over to its harmless "flower" side, then to bounce off it: Mario is then catapulted straight onto Rango's head. You have to repeat the move three times, dodging his furious leaps across the arena, to land a Multi Moon.

One thing not to mix up: Rango faces Mario for the first time here, but he is not the game's very first Broodal — that role goes to Topper, in the Cap Kingdom. Rango, for his part, comes back later to block the way in the Snow Kingdom.

Scotland meets haute couture: a one-of-a-kind blend

The Lake Kingdom pulls off a mix found nowhere else in the game: Scottish folklore — the lake, Dorrie inspired by Loch Ness — married to the world of haute couture, all of it sprinkled with Greek colonnades. That strong identity makes it one of Odyssey's most memorable kingdoms despite its fairly modest size.

On the exploration side, the kingdom is packed with Power Moons: more than forty in all, including the famous Multi Moon handed over by Rango. You also collect fifty regional coins shaped like scales, the local currency used to treat yourself to outfits and souvenirs bearing the kingdom's likeness. Short but wonderfully different, the Lake Kingdom remains that refreshing detour where fashion has politely replaced danger.
