The underground tyrant of Gusty Garden
Major Burrows shows up in Super Mario Galaxy (Wii, 2007). He is the oversized, crowned version of the moles Mario runs into across the galaxy: a massive reddish-brown body, two huge digging claws and, above all, a spiked blue helmet that looks an awful lot like the shell of a Spiny.
That headgear is not just decorative: it blocks any attack from above and doubles as a tool for burrowing back underground. As the head of the Monty Moles of the Galaxy era, he keeps his garden planet living in terror.
A boss who torments a Star Bunny
The staging of his fight has stayed with players: when Mario arrives, Major Burrows is busy chasing a little Star Bunny across the planet, fully intending to make a meal of it. The plumber steps in, and the rabbit hunt turns into a mole hunt.
This little wordless story gives the fight a flavor found nowhere else in the game: you are not fighting for a door or a treasure, but to save a victim scurrying away right in front of you. Series folklore in two images: a ridiculous tyrant and an innocent to protect.
The fight: driving the mole out of its hole
Taking on Major Burrows means solving a giant molehill problem. Buried, he is untouchable; helmeted, he is impossible to hit from above. The solution comes in three steps:
- When he charges underground, only the mound of earth gives away his position — you have to dodge it like a shark fin.
- A ground pound on the surface nearby makes him burst out in surprise, dazed, out of his tunnel.
- Once he is exposed, all it takes is hitting him with a spin to send him running — until the charge too many.
Cornered, the king loses his temper, speeds up his charges and becomes genuinely dangerous: a classic crescendo, perfectly executed.

Pride of place in the most iconic galaxy
Major Burrows owes a great deal to his address: he is the boss of Gusty Garden, the most beloved galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy, the one whose orchestral theme is regularly crowned the best music in the entire saga. Running into this big grump amid those flying meadows and their drifting dandelion puffs is a memory etched into a whole generation of Wii players.
His helmeted silhouette has thus become inseparable from the imagery of Galaxy, just like the Lumas or the apple planets of his galaxy.
The return in Super Mario Galaxy 2
Proof of his status: Major Burrows is one of the happy few invited back in Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010): the sequel devotes an entire galaxy to fighting back to back the standout bosses of the first game, and the royal mole answers the call, nastier than ever.
Since then, the monarch of the tunnels has kept a low profile — but in the memory of fans, he remains THE mole boss of the Galaxy era, the grumpy guardian of the loveliest garden in space.
