A witch of the Shadow Sirens

Vivian first appears in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, released on GameCube in 2004 and developed by Intelligent Systems. Together with her two sisters, she makes up a group of shadow witches: the Shadow Sirens (known as the Obscur Trio in the French version).

Each sister commands an element tied to the color of her hat: Beldam, the eldest, rules over ice; Marilyn wields lightning; and Vivian, the youngest, controls fire. Hired by Grodus to stop Mario from gathering the Crystal Stars, the three sisters start out as antagonists. But where Beldam proves cruel and contemptuous, especially toward her youngest sister, Vivian stands out for a gentleness and a sensitivity that feel utterly out of place in a supposed villain.

From enemy to ally

The turning point comes in Chapter 4, in Twilight Town. Mistreated and humiliated by Beldam, Vivian crosses paths with Mario, who shows her kindness in spite of everything. That simple gesture is enough to tip the balance: she walks out on the Shadow Sirens and becomes the fifth companion on the plumber's team.

From then on, Vivian turns against her sisters and against the X-Nauts. Her arc is a story of emancipation: withdrawn and submissive at first, she gradually gains the confidence she needs to stand up to the sister who belittled her. In the epilogue, once the Shadow Queen is defeated, a reconciliation takes shape among the three sisters.

The power of shadow and fire

Vivian's great specialty out in the field is her ability to pull Mario into her shadow. Hidden that way, the two heroes can slip out of sight of enemies, dodge certain attacks and pass under moving obstacles. The power serves exploration just as much as it helps solve the game's puzzles.

In battle, Vivian is an aggressive fire attacker. Her abilities come with wonderfully colorful names:

  • Shade Fist: a direct strike that costs no Flower Points.
  • Veil: she tucks Mario away in her shadow to dodge the enemy's attack on the following turn.
  • Fiery Jinx: her signature move, which hits and burns every enemy at once while piercing their defense.
  • Infatuate: a kiss that leaves opponents confused, unlocked at a higher rank.

A transgender identity censored, then restored

Vivian has also become a symbol for a reason that goes far beyond gameplay. In the original Japanese version, the character is presented as a transgender girl: her sister Beldam even uses it as fuel for her mockery, adding to the abuse Vivian suffers.

When the game came out in 2004, the English and German versions removed every reference to that identity, swapping Beldam's slurs for neutral jabs. Other localizations, including the French, Italian and Spanish ones, stayed closer to the original text. The Nintendo Switch remake, released on 23 May 2024, reintroduced and confirmed that identity in every version of the game, while toning down the harassment scenes.

A character turned icon

That restoration was widely praised by the specialist press, which saw it as a notable move on Nintendo's part. In 2025, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door even landed a GLAAD Media Awards nomination in the best video game category, a sign of the symbolic weight the character has taken on.

Beyond that dimension, Vivian remains a recurring nod throughout the Paper Mario universe. She turns up as a collectible card and as a plush in Super Paper Mario, as a sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and as a spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. From a background villain, she has become one of the most talked-about figures in the saga.
