The only item that grants truly unlimited flight, with no P-Meter attached. Known as the P-Wing, the winged treasure of Super Mario Bros. 3 grants Raccoon Mario free flight for an entire level. This guide explains how it goes far beyond the classic P-Meter, how to get your hands on it in-game, and where that famous “P”, inherited from the P-Meter, comes from.

In the vast arsenal of Super Mario Bros. 3, one item stands out as the absolute treasure: the P-Wing (Aile magique in French), also called the P Wing or Winged P. Where most power-ups make Mario stronger for a few seconds, this one simply hands him the keys to the sky.

The idea is dizzying: unlimited flight for an entire level, exactly where the P-Meter usually runs dry in a matter of seconds. Here is a look back at the origin, the hunt and the surprising mutation of this cult item.

The P-Wing, a power-up like no other

The P-Wing first appears in Super Mario Bros. 3, released in Japan in 1988 (1990 in North America, 1991 in Europe). On the inventory screen, it takes the shape of a small white wing stamped with a “P”, and its role is anything but minor.

Unlike a mushroom or a Fire Flower, it does not settle for a one-off effect. Once used, it turns Mario into Raccoon Mario with a “P” flashing on his belly, and grants him unlimited flight for the whole duration of the stage. It is, quite literally, a free pass to soar over the level from start to finish.

The same state also benefits Tanooki Mario: whatever the flying form, the “P” stays lit permanently.

Unlimited flight: what the P-Meter never allows

To understand why the P-Wing is so coveted, you need to know the P-Meter, the power gauge. Normally, Raccoon Mario has to run a long distance to fill it; once it is full, a “P” starts flashing and Mario can take off for a few seconds by tapping the jump button.

The catch: that gauge drains fast once you are airborne. Staying up high for long is impossible without dropping back down to build momentum again, and the lack of ground space makes sustained flight very hard in most levels.

The P-Wing wipes out that limit entirely. It keeps the “P” flashing permanently, as if the gauge stayed full forever. The result: Mario can fly without interruption, cross an entire stage through the air, reach secret areas otherwise out of reach and ignore almost every hazard on the ground.

The power only ends in two cases: if Mario takes damage (he then drops back to plain Raccoon Mario), or when the level ends. The P-Wing is therefore a single-use bonus, to be spent on the stage of your choice.

How to land the P-Wing in Super Mario Bros. 3

A rare item above all others, the P-Wing never turns up inside the levels themselves. You have to go hunting for it, and two main methods exist on the world map.

  • The Hammer Bros. chests. By beating certain Hammer Bros. that patrol the map, you sometimes pick up a treasure chest whose contents may be a P-Wing, among other bonuses.
  • The White Mushroom Houses. In one specific level of each world (except the last), collecting enough coins makes a white house appear on the map. It then offers up a rare bonus: either the P-Wing, or the Anchor, which pins the airships in place.

That rarity explains its status as a holy grail: plenty of players hoarded it for the nastiest stages, like the fortresses or the levels of World 8.

Why a “P”? The Paratroopa legacy

You might assume that the “P” in P-Wing stands for “Power”. Not at all. That “P” actually points back to Patapata, the Japanese name of the Paratroopa, that winged Koopa fluttering above the levels.

The logic is crystal clear: just as the Paratroopa is a Koopa Troopa fitted with wings, the P-Wing is the item that gives Mario wings. The nod makes even more sense given that this very wing doubles as the P-Meter icon in the game.

This detail is a reminder of the Japanese roots of Super Mario Bros. 3, also visible in the transformation into a tanuki, the animal from Japanese folklore famed as a master of disguise.

The design survived all the way to Mario Kart's gliders, “P” included.

Super Mario 3D Land: the P-Wing becomes an exit ticket

Twenty-three years later, the P-Wing resurfaces in Super Mario 3D Land (2011) on Nintendo 3DS. But its role has changed radically.

Unlimited flight is gone: here it becomes an assist item. Once activated, it instantly teleports Mario right next to the goal flagpole of the level, skipping every single challenge.

There are two ways to get it. It pops out of an Assist Block after losing ten lives in the same level of the normal worlds, a helping hand for players who are stuck. You can also dig it out of certain Mystery Boxes.

Once picked up, the P-Wing is kept in reserve and used later, at the moment of your choosing. Careful, though: grabbing another power-up makes it vanish, unless it happens to be a Star or an Invincibility Leaf.

From ultimate treasure to safety net

In the space of two games, the P-Wing has followed a fascinating trajectory. In Super Mario Bros. 3, it was the reward for the most meticulous players, an overpowered ability earned through piles of collected coins and defeated Hammer Bros.

In Super Mario 3D Land, it has morphed into a safety net held out to anyone stuck on a tricky stretch. The symbol stays the same — a wing that abolishes distance — but the spirit has tipped from mastery toward accessibility.

Either way, the item keeps its aura: that of the power-up which, with a single flap of its wings, sends Mario flying over the rules.
