In the long gallery of Mario's enemies, few owe nothing to Bowser. Antasma, the Bat King, is one such exception: he is the main antagonist of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros., a game released on Nintendo 3DS in 2013 (July 12 in Europe, July 18 in Japan). A creature born of nightmares, he dreams of engulfing the waking world in an endless night.

A Bat Became the King of Nightmares

Antasma was not always a terrifying monarch. Originally, he was just an ordinary bat living on Pi'illo Island, the land of the Pi'illo people — strange, living pillow-like creatures capable of transporting sleepers into the Dream World.

Everything changed the day the bat fed on a Pi'illo's nightmares. This nocturnal feast gradually transformed him: by continuously absorbing the terror of sleepers, he swelled, mutated, and became the Bat King, a nightmare lord hungry for power. His Japanese name perfectly summarizes the character: アックーム (Akkūmu), based on the word akumu, meaning "nightmare."

The Dark Stone and the Great Slumber of the Pi'illos

Thirsty for power, Antasma set his sights on the Dark Stone, an ancient Pi'illo artifact. There are actually two twin stones:

  • The Dream Stone — a spiral-shaped rainbow crystal that grants wishes from happy dreams;
  • The Dark Stone — its dark counterpart, with jagged edges, which draws its power from nightmares.

Antasma stole the latter and unleashed the wrath of the Pi'illos and their legendary guardian, the Zeekeeper, a huge bird protector of the island. Defeated, he was sealed deep within the Dream World. But before falling, he shattered the Dark Stone: the fragments, which became Nightmare Chunks, scattered across the island and petrified the entire Pi'illo civilization, trapping their souls within the stone.

The Alliance with Bowser... and the Inevitable Betrayal

Centuries later, Princess Peach is invited to visit Pi'illo Island. When Luigi falls asleep on a pillow — actually a Pi'illo — Antasma takes advantage of the situation to escape and abduct Peach by sucking her into Luigi's dream. Mario sets off in pursuit into the Dream World, alongside Dreamy Luigi (Luigi's dream version), his companion Starlow, and Prince Dreambert, heir to the Pi'illos, freed from his stone prison.

Antasma initially intended to seize Peach's power, but his encounter with Bowser changed his plans. Judging the Koopa King stronger and more evil than the princess, he proposed an alliance. Together, they obtained the Dream Stone and filled it with energy by forcing the inhabitants into a deep sleep using hypnotic sound waves. From this wish, Neo Bowser Castle, a gigantic flying fortress combining their two styles, was born.

The alliance did not survive its success: once the castle was in the sky, Bowser betrayed Antasma and claimed the Dream Stone and the fortress for himself. Humiliated, the Bat King's only obsession became revenge.

The Final Battle in the Dream World

It is at the top of Neo Bowser Castle, in its dream version, that the decisive duel takes place. Antasma then reveals his true form: a spectral silhouette with a torn cape and a bow tie adorned with a hypnotic spiral. The battle mobilizes his entire arsenal of nightmares:

  • he makes snacks appear, which he devours to regain power;
  • he unleashes electric orbs and swarms of bats;
  • he traps Dreamy Luigi to isolate Mario.

Once defeated, Antasma meets a end as grotesque as it is definitive: he inflates like a balloon before exploding. However, the threat is not over: Bowser immediately uses the Dream Stone to transform into a colossal version of himself and becomes the game's final boss. After the victory, the Zeekeeper turns the stone's dust into a giant coin that he scatters as a rain of coins over the island, so that no one will be tempted to abuse its magic again.

Antasma, a Unique Villain in the Saga

Antasma holds a unique place among Mario's villains. Unlike Cackletta or the Koopa King's minions, he does not belong to Bowser's "family": he is a completely new threat, with his own mythology linked to sleep and dreams. His vampiric inspiration — the accent, the cape, the transformation into a bat — openly evokes Count Dracula.

A useful detail for fans: the character reappeared as a Spirit (support type) in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where his battle takes place on a stage that puts players touching the ground to sleep — a direct nod to Dream Team. In terms of names, he remains Antasma in France but becomes Phobieux in the Quebec version.
