A shrill cackle, a purple robe and boundless ambition: Cackletta — Graguémona in French, Geragemōna (ゲラゲモーナ) in Japan — is one of the great villains of the Mario RPGs. A witch of the Beanbean Kingdom, she is the main antagonist of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, released on Game Boy Advance in 2003 and remade on Nintendo 3DS in 2017.

Her plan? Steal the voice of Princess Peach to awaken a star able to grant wishes, the Beanstar. From trickery to the possession of Bowser, here is the story of this unkillable witch and of her devoted minion, Fawful (Gracowitz in French).

A witch of the Beanbean Kingdom

Cackletta belongs to the bean folk (Beanish), the inhabitants of the Beanbean Kingdom, next door to the Mushroom Kingdom. In Superstar Saga, she first shows up under a false identity, that of a “goodwill ambassador”, to get close to her targets without raising suspicion. Tall — nearly twice the height of Mario and Luigi — with green skin, pink eyes and horns crowning her head, she embodies the classic witch pushed to the extreme: selfish, sadistic and a master of disguise.

Her motivation comes from a local legend: the Beanstar , a sleeping star that watches over the Beanbean Kingdom, can grant the wish of whoever awakens it with a “pure” voice. Cackletta wants to seize that power to conquer the Beanbean Kingdom, then the Mushroom Kingdom, and finally the whole world.

Stealing Peach's voice

Only a voice of exceptional purity can awaken the Beanstar: that of Princess Peach. Cackletta and Fawful strike from the very start of the adventure by attacking Bowser's airship, then the witch steals Peach's voice and replaces it with an “explosive vocabulary” made of symbols that set off small blasts.

The plan backfires, though: as a precaution, the real Peach had been replaced by Birdo. The stolen voice is therefore the wrong one, and the Beanstar's awakening turns into a fiasco. Mario, Luigi and their allies then set off after the witch across the Beanbean Kingdom.

Bowletta: the fusion with Bowser

Cornered, Cackletta is beaten a first time by the Mario brothers. But death has no hold on her: Fawful vacuums her spirit into his headgear. When the pair come across an unconscious Bowser, the witch's soul leaves the helmet to possess the body of the Koopa King.

And so is born Bowletta — Bowsémona in French, a blend of “Bowser” and “Graguémona”. This hybrid body mixes the witch's face, horns and purple eyes with Bowser's shell and fiery breath. Far more powerful, Bowletta takes control of the Beanbean Kingdom and of Bowser's troops, and blackmails the heroes by holding Peach hostage.

The final battle inside Bowser's body

The decisive clash takes place inside Bowser's own body. There Mario and Luigi hunt down Cackletta's soul, a monstrous gaseous entity whose heart is its weak point. Once that heart is destroyed, the witch's spirit fades for good and Bowser, freed at last, comes back to his senses — without the slightest memory of his possession.

Fawful and Cackletta's legacy

Cackletta's only affection goes to her minion, Fawful (Gracowitz in French), unfailingly loyal. He is the one who carries her influence long after she is gone: a mere servant here, he will later return to centre stage as the main villain of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, where he still speaks of his “mistress”.

A standout antagonist from the early days of Mario & Luigi, Cackletta returns to the spotlight with the remake Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, released on Nintendo 3DS on 6 October 2017.
