Two icons in a handful of notes

Few sounds are as universally recognizable as Mario's coin sound and jump sound. They last a fraction of a second and weigh only a few bytes, and yet players who have never touched a NES recognize them the instant they hear them.

Their power owes nothing to chance: it springs from a marriage between precise musical choices and merciless hardware constraints. To understand these two sounds is to understand how Nintendo turned a technical limit into a signature.


The coin, from the 1983 arcade to the NES

The coin sound effect wasn't born in Super Mario Bros., but in the arcade cabinet Mario Bros. (1983), the game where Mario and Luigi knock creatures loose by punching up through the platforms.

When the game was ported to the NES, the sound was lowered by two semitones. And it is precisely that lowered version that became the benchmark: Super Mario Bros. (1985 in Japan) picks up its arrangement, and the whole saga then falls in line behind it.

In other words, the coin that millions of players believe was born with the mustachioed plumber is in fact a borrowing from an older game, simply retuned for the new console.

Anatomy of the “bling”: a B, an E, an appoggiatura

Musically, the “bling” comes down to just two notes: a B followed by an E. The gap between them traces a perfect fourth, a clean, open, luminous interval that snaps in the ear.

All the sparkle comes from that first B: it acts as an appoggiatura, that little ornamental note that leaps in just before the main one, borrowed from the vocabulary of classical music. It is what gives the sound its shimmering “bling”.

That is why a two-note sound effect feels so “musical” and burns itself into your memory after a single listen. Where other consoles settled for a flat “beep”, Nintendo wrote a genuine micro-melody.


The jump's “boing”: an A that climbs

The jump sound effect follows the opposite logic: a single pitch worked over time. It starts with an attack on an A, then races up to a much higher A.

That continuous rise has a name: the portamento (or glissando), what the Italians call a “carriage” — the note is carried from one pitch to the other with no staircase steps, like a spring uncoiling.

The tastiest detail is that Kondo doubted the whole idea. Told to invent a jump sound, he reportedly objected that “but people don't make a noise when they jump!”. His rising “boing” nevertheless became the universal language of the video game leap.


Born of constraint: five channels and 40 KB

This spareness owes everything to a technical shortage. On the NES, Kondo composed with roughly five audio channels, and the entire game fit into barely 40 KB of memory.

Under those conditions, stacking layers was out of the question: every sound effect had to be short, distinct and instantly legible, without ever masking the background music. The constraint turned into an aesthetic.

That very bareness forged their strength. Denied realism, Kondo aimed for instant recognition: two notes, a tenth-of-a-second glissando, and the message lands. The hardware limit gave birth to icons.


Recycled icons: from Smash to Animal Crossing

Once found, these sounds never fell silent again. The coin rings out in Super Mario World, in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and in dozens of other titles, often almost unchanged since 1985.

It even spills out of the series: in Super Smash Bros., it is the jumping uppercut Mario throws (Super Jump Punch) that triggers the coin's “bling” when it connects with the opponent. It also turns up outside the franchise, in Animal Crossing or Puzzle & Dragons.

The variants mostly play with pitch: the coin in Mario Paint rings three semitones higher, while the one in Super Mario 64 drops by a semitone. Slight retunings that confirm one thing: this motif is a sonic heritage you can modulate but never disown.
