Mario seals himself inside a boulder and barrels straight ahead. Known as the Rock Mushroom, this Super Mario Galaxy 2 power-up is triggered by shaking the Wii Remote. This guide explains how it lets you crush enemies and shatter purple crystals, and introduces Boulder Bowl, the cosmic bowling galaxy built entirely around it.

The Rock Mushroom (Champignon de pierre in French) is one of the most overlooked power-ups in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Its concept is as simple as it is radical: Mario seals himself inside a boulder and barrels straight ahead.

Known in French as Champi pierre on Wii, it turns the plumber into Rock Mario, a living cannonball that flattens everything in its path.

A mushroom that turns Mario to stone

In the vast gallery of transformations of the Super Mario Galaxy saga, some transformations shine through grace, others through sheer force. The Rock Mushroom belongs squarely in the second category: this grey mushroom, as bristly as a pebble, turns the hero into Rock Mario, a mass of stone ready to smash through anything in its way.

The power makes its debut in Super Mario Galaxy 2, released in 2010 on Wii. Two French spellings coexist depending on the version: Champi pierre in the Wii days, then Rock Mushroom in the recent re-release. One crystal-clear idea sits behind both names: Mario seals himself inside a boulder and rolls straight ahead, turned into a living projectile.

Shake the Wii Remote to wrap yourself in rock

The whole mechanic of this power rests on the Wii motion controls. Once the mushroom is picked up, Mario stays an ordinary character at first, still able to run and jump: it takes one precise gesture to wake the rock.

  • You have to shake the Wii Remote for Mario to wrap himself instantly in a stone boulder and start rolling.
  • To pick up speed, you jump, then shake again the controller: the boulder then accelerates hard, ideal for clearing a chasm or slamming into a target.
  • Rolled into a ball, the hero charges in an almost straight line, with deliberately limited turning ability.

This rough handling is no accident but a deliberate game design choice. The whole appeal of the power-up lies in managing momentum and trajectory, not in millimetre-perfect steering. You have to anticipate, aim, then let it rip, even if that means sailing into the void when you misjudge the angle.

Crushing enemies, shattering purple crystals

Under his shell of rock, Mario becomes a genuine free-rolling wrecking machine. No need to jump on your opponents: the boulder crushes enemies on contact, rolling straight through them like a wrecking ball.

The boulder also works as a brute-force key. It shatters the purple crystals that, in Galaxy 2, often hold items inside. There is no other way to grab those bonuses: only the boulder's force frees the coins and rewards trapped within.

So the Rock Mushroom is not just an offensive weapon: it is also a progression tool. Some passages, some secrets and some Stars only open up if you roll in the right place, at the right moment, pulverising the obstacle blocking the way.

Boulder Bowl, the cosmic bowling galaxy

The power-up is inseparable from the Boulder Bowl Galaxy, tucked into World 2 of Super Mario Galaxy 2 (renamed “ Mine d'étoiles ” in the European version). This is where the mushroom officially debuts and where the game teaches you how to handle it.

The English name is a nod to bowling: naturally, the galaxy puts on stage enemies shaped like bowling pins, the Pinheads, which Mario knocks over with one boulder run the way you go for a strike. The whole layout of the level, all ramps and curves, is designed for rolling.

The Rock Mushroom then reappears in other galaxies, notably Melty Monster and Freezy Flake, where the boulder has to cope with lava or snow settings. Every time, the level design bends to fit this very distinctive transformation.

A raw deep cut in a gallery of finesse

What makes the Rock Mushroom so endearing is its contrast with the rest of the Galaxy line-up. The series is full of delicate transformations: the Bee Mushroom for fluttering from flower to flower, the Boo Mushroom (Boo Mario) for passing through walls, or the Spring Mushroom for bouncing sky-high.

The rock, on the other hand, owns its brutality. Where the bee and the ghost reward precision, the boulder rewards force and inertia. It is one of the most physical and most direct transformations in Galaxy 2, which is why it stays confined to a handful of tailor-made challenge levels rather than being everywhere.

That rarity makes it a true deep cut for fans: less iconic than the Fire Flower or the Rainbow Star, the Rock Mushroom remains a well-kept secret in the gallery of galactic powers.

From Wii to Switch, the boulder returns

Long trapped on the Wii and its shake-happy controllers, the Rock Mushroom has found a second life. It is playable again in the compilation Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, released on Switch in 2025, which puts both classics back into everyone's hands.

This re-release is also what popularised the French spelling Rock Mushroom, where the Wii made do with the shorthand Champi pierre. A perfect chance for a new generation to (re)discover one of the most raw and satisfying powers in Mario's space adventure.
