King underwater, frankly ridiculous on dry land. Kaeru Sūtsu in Japan, the Frog Suit from Super Mario Bros. 3 delivers fast, perfectly controlled swimming. This guide explains the trade-off — an awkward, hopping gait out of the water —, the right moments to slip it on, and the comebacks of this cult power-up.

The Frog Suit (Frog Suit in English) is one of the most memorable power-ups in Super Mario Bros. 3. Once Mario slips it on, it transforms him into Frog Mario and completely changes the way he moves, in the water as much as on dry land.

Behind its slightly comical amphibian look hides a formidable swimming tool, designed to tame the game's merciless water levels.

A power-up born in Super Mario Bros. 3

The Frog Suit makes its debut in Super Mario Bros. 3, released in Japan on 23 October 1988, then in North America in February 1990 and finally in Europe on 29 August 1991. In Japan, it is called カエルスーツ (Kaeru Sūtsu), literally "frog suit".

Like the game's other suits, it works as a higher-tier power-up: pick it up and Mario shifts into Frog Mario, recognisable by his green outfit and his big webbed feet. Taking a hit makes him lose the suit and simply drops him back to Super Mario, without killing him on the spot.

Underwater, Mario is king

It is in the water that the suit reveals its full power: where an ordinary Mario sinks and drags along, Frog Mario swims fast and with precision, in any direction.

  • Fast, fluid swimming: underwater movement becomes far quicker and easier to steer than with any other Mario form.
  • Total control: Mario can hold perfectly still in the water and resist currents that would otherwise sweep him away.
  • Boosted jumps: the suit also lets him leap higher than usual as he bursts out of the water.
  • Easier dodging: that agility helps you avoid Cheep-Cheeps and Bloopers, the enemies that swarm the sea floor.

On dry land, the price of the suit

This gain in aquatic ease comes at a very real price on dry land: out of the water, Frog Mario turns slow and clumsy.

Instead of running, all he can do is hop about awkwardly, which makes precision platforming tricky and long stretches a chore. One notable exception: while carrying an item such as a shell, he gets his normal running speed back.

That contrast makes the Frog Suit a power-up that is highly specialised: excellent in its element, cumbersome everywhere else. Many players keep it in reserve in their inventory and only slip it on at the water's edge.

Where to find it and when to use it

The Frog Suit turns up in a handful of very specific places in Super Mario Bros. 3, which makes it a fairly rare and precious item.

  • Giant Question Blocks: it shows up in certain bonus rooms hidden behind those big blocks.
  • Houses of Toad: they hand them out from World 3 onwards, the water world.
  • Secret spot: one is also hidden as early as World 2, the desert world.

Its ideal playground remains World 3 (Water Land), built entirely around water, to the point that its castle island traces the outline of Japan. That is where the suit turns painful levels into pure fun.

A Mario 3 icon and its comebacks

The Frog Suit belongs to the quartet of cult suits in Super Mario Bros. 3, alongside the Tanooki Suit, the Hammer Suit and the famous Goomba's Shoe (Kuribo's Shoe in English). Each one embodies a facet of the game's unbridled inventiveness.

Back as early as Paper Mario: Sticker Star (2012), it made its return in Super Mario Maker (2015) as a Frog Mario costume unlocked through the Mystery Mushroom, a purely cosmetic skin with no effect on gameplay.

It then became a genuine playable item in Super Mario Maker 2, added to the Super Mario Bros. 3 style by the 3.0.0 update of 22 April 2020. A fun new twist: Frog Mario can now run on water while carrying an item, as long as the P meter is maxed out.
