The very first Donkey Kong (1981)

According to Rare's designers, Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong from the arcade cabinet Donkey Kong (1981), the gorilla who kidnapped Pauline and pelted young Mario with barrels. Now old, he hung up his gloves and passed the name "Donkey Kong" on to his descendants, which is why he is also nicknamed Donkey Kong Sr.

The character as we know him first appears under the name Cranky in Donkey Kong Country, released on Super Nintendo in Japan on November 26, 1994 (under the title Super Donkey Kong). Physically, he has shrunk over the years: skinnier, more stooped and far less muscular than the modern Donkey Kong, he visually embodies the weight of all those years spent saving the world.

Grandfather, father or the very same ape? The family-tree controversy

The exact link between Cranky and today's Donkey Kong has always caused confusion. The most official version comes from Rare: the modern Donkey Kong is the grandson of Cranky. Between the two generations comes Donkey Kong Jr., Cranky's son seen in the 1982 cabinet, while Wrinkly Kong, Cranky's late wife, is presented as the grandmother of today's hero.

  • The Super Nintendo games clearly describe him as the grandfather of the new Donkey Kong.
  • Donkey Kong 64 (1999) muddies the waters: there, Cranky calls Donkey Kong "my son". Developer Gregg Mayles later explained that this was a side effect of his senility, the old ape no longer remembering the exact relationship.
  • Super Mario Bros. – The Movie (2023) decides otherwise: there, Cranky is the father of Donkey Kong and the king of the Kong kingdom, voiced by Fred Armisen.

A grouchy mentor: shops, advice and potions

Cranky's great role in the saga is that of the grumpy mentor who helps in spite of himself. As early as the first Donkey Kong Country, he hands out free advice from his hut while breaking the fourth wall to criticise the game's design and praise "the good old days" of the arcades.

  • DKC2: Diddy's Kong Quest (1995): he opens the Monkey Museum on Crocodile Isle and starts charging for his wisdom.
  • Donkey Kong 64 (1999): renamed "Professor Cranky Kong", he runs a laboratory in every area and sells potions that unlock new abilities, paid for in Banana Coins.
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns (2010): with his pension scrapped, he turns to trade and runs a shop in every world, selling items and lives for Banana Coins.

Beneath his brusque manner, Cranky has "a heart of gold", and his business acts as a genuine safety net for players who are struggling.

Cranky playable: his cane in Tropical Freeze

After more than twenty years as a bit player, Cranky finally becomes playable in the main series with Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (2014). There he joins the trio of Donkey, Diddy and Dixie as a partner with very distinctive controls.

His signature ability is inspired by a famous Disney duck: Cranky uses his cane like a pogo stick, bouncing higher than a standard jump and, above all, safely on spikes and the surfaces that would hurt the other Kongs. He also carries a gun that fires thanks to his dentures, with unlimited ammo. A delicious detail: in this game, the grumbler-in-chief has not a single written line of dialogue.

From the NES to the movie and Bananza (2025)

Cranky's longevity is impressive. He turns up as an instructor in the spin-offs DK: King of Swing and DK: Jungle Climber, as an opponent in the mini-games of DKC3, then on the big screen in 2023. He even shows up in the 1990s animated series, where the German version renames him "Bubbles", a nod to the famous chimpanzee owned by Michael Jackson.

His most recent appearance to date is Donkey Kong Bananza (2025): with the cane giving way to a shovel, Cranky pops up in every layer of the underground world to hand Donkey Kong a Banandium Gem, never without scolding him for his carelessness. He even rides down on the back of Rambi, proving that after more than forty years in the business, the first of the Kongs has lost none of his bite.
