Koops, the partner who didn't dare

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (released in 2004 on GameCube, then reissued on Nintendo Switch in 2024), Mario surrounds himself with seven colourful partners.

Koops is the second of them, recruited as early as Chapter 1, right after the Goomba Goombella. He is a Koopa Troopa with a green shell, polite and kind, but above all terribly withdrawn.

When Mario meets him in the village of Petalburg (Carafleur in French), Koops stammers, apologises and looks like anything but an adventurer — and yet he hides an unexpected determination.

The sketches show him hunched and shy from the very start — his arc was written into his design.

Petalburg: a son, a father, a dragon

What drives Koops is his missing father, Koopley (called Koopak in the French version). Some ten years before the events of the game, Koopley set out to face the dragon terrorising the Petal Meadows region.

That dragon is Hooktail (Carbocroc in French), who swallowed the castle's inhabitants whole. Koopley never came back, and the whole village believed him dead for ten years.

The truth is far more incredible: Koopley survived, swallowed alive, curled up inside his shell deep in the dragon's stomach for a whole decade.

When Mario and Koops bring Hooktail down at the end of Chapter 1, they free Koopley and claim the Diamond Star, the first of the seven Crystal Stars everyone is after in the game.

From coward to hero: a real character arc

What makes Koops so endearing is his growth: at first he trembles at the slightest threat and doubts himself constantly.

He joins Mario partly to prove to himself that he is capable of something great, and his confidence grows as he faces enemies and overcomes his fears alongside the plumber.

The coward of the opening slowly becomes a dependable ally: Koops embodies one of the clearest arcs about courage among all the game's partners.

Koopie Koo, the love that doubted him

Koops has a girlfriend: Koopie Koo, called Koopline in the French version. She lives in Petalburg too and is not exactly thrilled to see him leave.

At first, Koopie Koo doubts the courage of Koops and is fiercely protective, even opposing his departure with Mario out of fear for him.

But seeing him hold firm and grow, she ends up backing him completely: by the end of the game, the two Koopas live peacefully together in Petalburg.

The shell as a weapon: his attacks and his limits

In battle, Koops fights with his shell: his basic attack sends him flying like a hurled shell at a ground enemy, the way a kicked Koopa skids across the floor.

  • He has attacks that hit every enemy on the ground in a single throw, very handy against groups.
  • He also has a shell shield ability that protects both Mario and himself from damage.
  • Outside battle, Mario can throw him forward like a projectile to hit switches or grab items out of reach.

His big weakness is glaring: Koops cannot hit flying enemies, which forces you to switch to another partner depending on the situation.

Kooper's heir: the line of allied Koopas

Koops is not the first Koopa to back Mario up: he is Kooper's spiritual heir, the Koopa partner from the very first Paper Mario, released on Nintendo 64 in 2000.

The two share the same shell-based fighting style and the same use in exploration: you launch them at a distance to trigger mechanisms or snag far-off items.

Where Kooper was an adventurous, enthusiastic Koopa, Koops plays on emotion and shyness overcome, an open nod to fans that still gives him a personality all his own.
