Madame Broode: Broodal Boss of Gold Chomp

1336 mots | Temps de lecture : 6 minute(s)

Madame Broode (same name in English, Madame Broode) is one of the most memorable figures in Super Mario Odyssey: a giant rabbit draped in crimson red, holding a wrecking-ball-sized golden Chomp on a leash. Far from being a mere minion, she is the one who pulls the strings of the rabbit gang serving Bowser.

As the first major boss of the adventure, she immediately sets the tone for the game: here, you don't hit the enemy directly; you turn their pet against them. Here’s an overview of the boss of the Broodals, her faithful Chompikins, and her two confrontations.

Summary

Who is Madame Broode?

Madame Broode is the head of the Broodals agency, the rabbit wedding planners hired by Bowser to organize his forced marriage to Princess Peach. Beware of a common misunderstanding: she is not one of the four Broodals who block your path from kingdom to kingdom, but rather their leader.

In the game's lore, these creatures are Lapinoids, and Madame Broode is the one who raised them. She reigns over their lair located on the dark side of the Moon, from where the agency orchestrates all the logistics of the grand wedding. Suffice it to say that she sits at the top of the hierarchy of Odyssey's secondary antagonists: the other Broodals are, in her eyes, merely employees.

The most imposing of the Broodals

It's impossible to mistake her for her subordinates: Madame Broode is by far the largest and most massive of the troupe. She wears a crimson red dress and hat, a pearl necklace, and spiked bracelets that, in a clear nod, resemble the silhouette of Bowser himself.

The developers carefully crafted the contrast with the four Broodals she oversees, each associated with their own color:

  • Topper, the vain top-hat stacker, in green;
  • Rango, the sharp-hat thrower, in orange;
  • Spewart, the poison expert, dressed in blue;
  • Hariet, with explosive pigtails, in pink and purple.

Her flamboyant outfit and diva-like appearance also evoke the stage wardrobe of Pauline, the mayor of New Donk City: a delightful design coincidence for a grand lady who takes herself very seriously.

Chompikins, her giant golden Chomp

Madame Broode's true weapon isn't her claws; it's Chompikins (Chain Chompikins in the original version), her oversized golden Chomp, held by a heavy chain. This big metallic hound even wears a small hat matching her mistress's – a detail that will be important in combat.

While the classic Chomps in the series simply pull on their stake, this one serves as a veritable living flail. During the duel, Madame Broode holds the other end of the chain and spins the beast to throw it at you. When Chompikins rushes forward, its owner is literally dragged behind it: it is precisely this dependence that will lead to her downfall.

Two fights, one trap

Madame Broode has the honor of being the first major boss of the adventure, in the Cascade Kingdom. Her confrontation perfectly illustrates the core gameplay of Odyssey: you never attack her directly; you capture her weapon with Cappy and send it back at her.

The process is clear:

  • Knock off Chompikins' hat by throwing Cappy at it;
  • Capture the golden Chomp once its head is uncovered;
  • Move away to stretch the chain as much as possible, until Madame Broode grips it with both hands;
  • Release: the Chomp shoots like a cannonball and collides head-on with its mistress.

Three hits are enough to defeat her. But she hasn't said her last word: you'll encounter her again for a rematch in the caverns of the Moon Kingdom, where the fight follows the same pattern, but is significantly harder.

An omnipresent face: airship and RoboBrood

A sign of her status as the big boss, Madame Broode's face serves as the figurehead for the Broodals' airship that cruises the skies of the kingdoms. Her likeness is displayed everywhere the agency goes, like a living logo reminding everyone who the real decision-maker is.

Her features are also found on the RoboBrood, the enormous mega-robot that shoots fireworks piloted by the four rabbits: the machine's gigantic front cannon faithfully reproduces Madame Broode's face. Even when absent from the screen, she watches over her protégés — proof that, at the agency, she is indeed the one who holds the reins.

Benchmarks and nod to her name

Super Mario Odyssey was released on October 27, 2017 on Nintendo Switch, simultaneously worldwide, and Madame Broode only appears in this title. She plays the role of the very first major boss, just before the hunt for Bowser takes you to the four corners of the kingdoms.

Her name also hides a clever pun: in English, "brood" refers to a clutch, a litter of young. The Broodals thus literally form Madame Broode's "brood" — a family of rabbit-organizers of whom she would be the matriarch. In Japan, she is named マダム・ブルード (Madamu Burūdo), a direct transcription of her Western name.
