Who is Madame Broode?

Madame Broode is the head of the Broodals agency, the wedding-planner rabbits hired by Bowser to prepare his forced wedding to Princess Peach. Beware of a common misconception: she is not one of the four Broodals who block your path from kingdom to kingdom, but rather their leader.

In the game's fiction, these creatures are rabbitoids, and it is Madame Broode who raised them. She rules over their lair, set up on the dark side of the Moon, from which the agency runs all the logistics of the big wedding. Needless to say, she sits at the top of the hierarchy of the secondary antagonists in Odyssey: in her eyes, the other Broodals are nothing more than employees.

The most imposing of the Broodals

There's no mistaking her for her subordinates: Madame Broode is by far the tallest and bulkiest of the troupe. She sports a crimson red dress and hat, a pearl necklace and spiked bracelets that recall, as a deliberate nod, the silhouette of Bowser himself.

The developers carefully played up the contrast with the four Broodals she supervises, each one tied to a colour of their own:

• Topper, the vain stacker of top hats, in green;
• Rango, who hurls his razor-sharp hat, in orange;
• Spewart, the poison specialist, dressed in blue;
• Hariet, with her explosive pigtails, in pink and mauve.

Her flamboyant outfit and diva bearing also call to mind the stage wardrobe of Pauline, the mayor of the Metro Kingdom: a delicious design coincidence for a grande dame who takes herself very seriously.

The real weapon of Madame Broode isn't her claws: it's Chain Chompikins (Chompinet in the French version), her golden Chain Chomp oversized, held back by a heavy chain. This big metal brute even wears a little hat matching his mistress's — a detail that will matter in battle.

Where the classic Chain Chomps of the series simply strain against their stake, this one acts as a genuine living flail. During the duel, Madame Broode holds the other end of the chain and swings the beast around to hurl it at you. When Chain Chompikins charges forward, his owner is quite literally dragged along behind him: that very dependence is what will be her undoing.

Two fights, one and the same trap

Madame Broode has the honour of being the first major boss of the adventure, in the Cascade Kingdom (Pays des Chutes in French). Her fight perfectly illustrates the heart of the gameplay in Odyssey: you never attack her directly, you capture her weapon and send it right back at her.

The procedure is crystal clear:

• Knock off the hat of Chain Chompikins by throwing Cappy;
• Capture the golden Chain Chomp once his head is bare;
• Move away to stretch the chain as far as it will go, until Madame Broode grips it with both hands;
• Let go: the Chain Chomp shoots off like a cannonball and slams into his mistress head-on.

Three rounds of that are enough to floor her. But she hasn't said her last word: you meet her again for a rematch in the caves of the Moon Kingdom (Pays de la Lune in French), where the fight follows the same pattern, only far tougher.

A face everywhere: the airship and the RoboBrood

A sign of her status as big boss, the face of Madame Broode serves as the figurehead of the Broodals' airship that criss-crosses the skies of the kingdoms. Her likeness shows up wherever the agency sets foot, like a living logo reminding everyone who the real decision-maker is.

Her features also turn up on the RoboBrood, the huge firework-launching mega-robot piloted by the four rabbits: the machine's gigantic front cannon faithfully reproduces the face of Madame Broode. Even off-screen, she keeps watch over her protégés — proof that at the agency she really is the one who holds the reins.

Key facts and the wink hidden in her name

Her name also hides a neat pun: in English, "brood" means a brood, a litter of young. The Broodals are therefore literally Madame Broode's "brood" — a family of rabbit planners of which she is the matriarch. In Japan, her name is マダム・ブルード (Madamu Burūdo), a direct transcription of her Western name.
