A wedding-planning agency… working for Bowser. In Super Mario Odyssey, the four Broodal rabbits are setting up the Koopa King's forced wedding. This guide breaks down their gadgets — Topper's spiked top hats, Hariet's hidden bombs, Spewart's poison — the order of the fights kingdom by kingdom, Madame Broode and her gold Chain Chomp, and finally the RoboBrood.

In Super Mario Odyssey (released on October 27, 2017 on Nintendo Switch), Bowser is not content with simply kidnapping Princess Peach: he is throwing a forced wedding, and he calls on a very particular agency of planners. The Broodals, four anthropomorphic rabbits dressed to the nines, criss-cross the planet to prepare the ceremony and block Mario's path, kingdom after kingdom.

Behind the sharp suits and the stiff manners hide formidable opponents, each with a gadget of their own. Here is the complete guide to Topper, Hariet, Spewart and Rango, of their fearsome final machine the RoboBrood, and of their mysterious boss, Madame Broode.

A wedding agency working for Bowser

The Broodals are a wedding-planner agency hired by Bowser to stage his forced union with Princess Peach. They are bipedal rabbits from the Dark Side of the Moon, where their lair stands: a carrot-shaped tower perched on a lunar plateau.

Their name, Broodals, blends the English words brood (a litter, a family) and bridal (wedding-related): a nod both to their sibling-squad look and to their trade as wedding planners. In every language, the four members keep their original names: Topper, Hariet, Spewart and Rango. Throughout the adventure they stay one step ahead of Mario, stealing the wedding ingredients (dress, bouquet, cake) and lying in wait for him in the kingdoms he passes through.

The four bosses and their gadgets

Each Broodal has a specialty within the agency and a favourite weapon in battle:

  • Topper — The leader, in charge of client relations. Dressed in green, he stacks three spiked top hats on his head and hurls them at Mario. You have to knock them off one by one with Cappy before landing a hit on him.
  • Hariet — The pyrotechnics specialist. Small, in a mauve-and-pink dress and hat, she hides bombs in her long pigtails which she spins around and flings all over the arena.
  • Spewart — The entertainer of the group, portly and dressed in blue. He spits a purple poison that forms toxic puddles across the arena, shrinking the safe ground little by little.
  • Rango — The bouncer, tall and lanky. He throws his razor-sharp yellow hat like a boomerang, forcing Mario to jump over the spinning blade.

Every time, the counter is the same: dodge the attack, then use the returned gadget or the opening it leaves to land a jump on his head.

The order of the fights, kingdom by kingdom

The Broodals come back for more in several kingdoms, often twice each. Here is the order in which Mario faces them:

  • Topper: first in Cap Kingdom, then in Bowser's Kingdom.
  • Madame Broode: in Cascade Kingdom (see below).
  • Hariet: in Sand Kingdom, then in Bowser's Kingdom.
  • Rango: in Lake Kingdom, then in Snow Kingdom.
  • Spewart: in Wooded Kingdom, then in Luncheon Kingdom.

These rematches raise the difficulty: smaller arenas, faster attacks and tighter attack chains. What all these duels have in common is the use of Cappy, Mario's living cap, essential for neutralising their gadgets.

Madame Broode and her gold Chain Chomp

At the head of the agency reigns Madame Broode, a massive rabbit in a crimson dress and hat. Unlike the other four, she never shows up alongside the group during their fights: she is the boss, giving orders from behind the scenes.

Mario faces her for the first time in Cascade Kingdom, at the top of the fossil falls, then a second time in Moon Kingdom. She fights alongside her pet, a gold Chain Chomp named "Broode's Chain Chomp", recognisable by its red spiked collar and the little pink hat matching its mistress's. To hit her, you have to capture the Chain Chomp with Cappy, then pull it backwards and let go to catapult it straight into Madame Broode.

It is in Wooded Kingdom that they steal an exceptional bouquet, just before the fight against the flower saucer Torkdrift.

The RoboBrood and the final showdown

The Broodals' grand finale plays out in Bowser's Kingdom, where the four rabbits climb aboard the RoboBrood, a huge walking battle robot topped with glass bubbles housing each pilot. Mario first has to destroy the armour on its legs by sending the robot's own bombs back at them, then climb to the top to burst each capsule and eject the Broodals one by one.

Beaten and out of a job, the rabbits fall back to their carrot-shaped tower, on the Dark Side of the Moon. That is where their last stand unfolds: Mario takes on the four Broodals again one by one, floor after floor, before the RoboBrood is brought back into action one final time at the top of the tower. Their defeat marks the end of the career of the most stubborn little wedding agency in the Mario universe.
