Golf, a sport famed for its calm, turned into a test of speed. Released on 25 June 2021 on Switch and developed by Camelot, Super Rush imposes Speed Golf: you take your shot, then sprint after your ball. This guide covers Battle Golf, the RPG-style Golf Adventure, and the series debuts of Pauline, Chargin' Chuck and King Bob-omb.

Mario Golf: Super Rush — a title that stays the same in every language — is the Nintendo Switch instalment of Camelot's golf series, released on 25 June 2021. Its big idea: turning the green into a race track thanks to Speed Golf.

Between its RPG-style Golf Adventure mode and the arrival of unexpected recruits such as Pauline, this sporting spin-off gleefully dusts off the Mario golf formula.

Golf you play at a run

Developed by Camelot Software Planning and published by Nintendo, the game was announced during the Nintendo Direct of 17 February 2021, then launched worldwide — France included — on 25 June 2021 on Nintendo Switch.

The Mario golf series has been around since the late 1990s, and Camelot has held the reins from the very start. But this Switch entry shakes up its habits: instead of simply aiming and swinging, you physically run to your ball between every shot. Golf, a sport famed for its calm, suddenly turns into a test of speed and stamina.

That philosophy runs through the whole game. You'll find classic rounds of golf, scored by stroke count, but also far punchier modes built for local or online play with up to four golfers. That blend is what gives Super Rush its identity as an uninhibited sports spin-off.

Speed Golf and Battle Golf: the green becomes a track

The Speed Golf is the game's showcase mode: up to four players hit their ball at the same time, then charge after it to sink it as fast as they can. The final score combines the number of strokes and the time on the course, so a bad shot costs you as many seconds as it does points.

To turn that sprint into a duel, every golfer has a dash that drains an energy gauge, plus a Special Shot. Once charged, it multiplies the power and triggers an effect unique to each character, usually designed to get in the opponents' way: a gust of wind, a shockwave or an obstacle that knocks their balls away.

  • The Battle Golf takes the same idea into a closed arena riddled with nine holes: the first to sink three wins the round, in an atmosphere of non-stop brawling.
  • The standard modes are still there for purists who prefer their golf calm, stroke by stroke.
  • Everything can be played locally or online, alone or with friends, which makes Super Rush a happily party-friendly title.

Golf Adventure, an RPG-style mode

The big single-player addition is Golf Adventure . You enrol your custom Mii in a Mushroom Kingdom club, aiming to climb every rung of the ladder.

The mode takes on the structure of a role-playing game: you earn experience, level up and spread points across stats such as power, control or stamina. Your golfer starts out clumsy and becomes, through training and matches, a fully fledged professional.

The road is strewn with challenges and boss battles, and along the way you meet plenty of Mushroom Kingdom faces, including rivals only too happy to play dirty tricks. Beyond its story, this adventure also doubles as a giant tutorial: it gently teaches you every subtlety of the game before you take on the other modes.

Pauline and Chargin' Chuck: a cast that keeps growing

At launch, 16 playable characters share the greens. Each has a distinct profile — power, accuracy, stamina — and a Special Shot of their own, so it pays to pick carefully depending on the course.

Two recruits in particular make their very first appearance in a Mario Golf. Pauline, the mayor of New Donk City made famous by Super Mario Odyssey, swaps her microphone for a club. Alongside her, Chargin' Chuck , the helmeted heavy inspired by American football, steps onto the green as well — a choice as unexpected as it is delightful.

The King Bob-omb rounds off this wave of first appearances. Around them stand the regulars — Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, Wario and Waluigi — proof that Camelot wanted to vary the silhouettes rather than replay a frozen cast.

Controls, updates and reception

When it comes to handling, two schools live side by side. You can play with the sticks, in the classic, precise way, or switch on the motion controls offered as an option: you line up your shot, then swing the Joy-Con like a real club to aim and strike, for a far more physical kind of immersion.

After release, Super Rush received several free updates that added new characters and courses. Those additions pushed the roster past twenty golfers and partly answered the complaints about the rather thin content at launch.

The soundtrack is once again entrusted to Motoi Sakuraba, the series' resident composer since its very beginnings. As for the reception, it was mixed at launch: the press praised the new modes, the controls and the colourful presentation, while pointing at the amount of content available on day one and how short Golf Adventure is.
