BossShadow SirensPaper Mario

Over a thousand years old, ice powers, and a little sister she torments. Marjolène in French, Beldam leads the Shadow Sirens alongside Marilyn and Vivian in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. This profile shows how the icy witch really pulls the strings of Grodus and the X-Nauts, and breaks down her cryokinesis.

Behind the scheming of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door hides neither a tyrannical king nor a mad scientist, but a small, icy witch: Beldam (Marjolène in the French version). The eldest of the Shadow Sirens, she pulls the strings of a thousand-year-old plot from the shadows.

Released on GameCube in 2004, then re-released on Nintendo Switch in 2024, the adventure makes Beldam one of the craftiest antagonists in the saga: a genuine mastermind where the other villains are just loud henchmen.

Beldam, the witch at the head of the Shadow Sirens

Beldam is a ghostly witch aged over 1,000 years, which makes her the undisputed eldest of the Shadow Sirens (Obscur Trio in French). Small and slight, she nonetheless has the strongest affinity for magic of the three sisters, a delicious contrast with the game's giants.

Far from charging in blindly, Beldam acts as a strategist: she designs the trio's plans, hands out the roles and makes every important decision. A former servant of the Shadow Queen (Reine des Ténèbres in French), she has had a single obsession for a millennium: bringing her mistress back to life after she was sealed behind the Thousand-Year Door. The game's entire plot in fact stems from this patient, methodical resolve.

Beldam, Marilyn and Vivian: three sisters, one scapegoat

The Shadow Sirens bring together three very different sisters. Marilyn, the middle sister, is the tallest and physically strongest and communicates only in cackles. Vivian (Viviane in French), the youngest, turns out to be the most sensitive and the most independent-minded of the group.

Beldam gives Vivian appalling treatment: she calls her “useless” and “ugly”, humiliates her relentlessly and pins her own mistakes on her. This constant abuse is no small detail: it is the emotional engine of the whole adventure and sets up the youngest sister's magnificent redemption arc.

With Marilyn, the eldest sister is a little less harsh, but she threatens her the moment a plan goes wrong. Beldam never leads through affection: she rules through fear, manipulation and contempt, even within her own family.

The real mastermind: manipulating Grodus and the X-Nauts

Beldam's stroke of genius is staying invisible while pulling the strings of the plot. She manipulates Grodus (Cruxinistre in French), the leader of the X-Nauts, and pushes him to gather the seven Crystal Stars , the keys to resurrecting the Queen.

To bait him, she dangles the promise that he will command the Shadow Queen once she is awake. It is a barefaced lie: Beldam knows full well that the Queen will never serve anyone. Grodus, his scientists and his entire army are, in her eyes, nothing but pawns thrown at Mario to wear him down.

While the X-Nauts wear themselves out hunting the plumber, Beldam moves her own pieces toward the Thousand-Year Door. Where Bowser blusters and Grodus threatens, she wins through cunning: it is her, not the apparent boss, who orchestrates the game's true threat.

Cryokinesis and the Veil technique

In battle, Beldam is a specialist in ice magic (cryokinesis): she freezes Mario to make him skip his turn and break his momentum. Her witch's repertoire does not stop at the cold, though.

  • She can enlarge an ally like Marilyn to multiply her striking power tenfold.
  • She knows how to shrink Mario to cut down the damage he deals.
  • She poisons and slows her opponents to methodically gain the upper hand.

Outside of fights, Beldam uses the Veil technique: by melting into the shadows, she spies on her targets without being seen or heard. That is how she quietly gathers the information that feeds every one of her plans, reinforcing her image as an all-knowing manipulator.

Vivian breaks the cycle: Beldam's redemption

The turning point comes when Vivian, worn out by the humiliations, chooses to join Mario as a partner. For the tyrannical eldest sister it is outright betrayal; for Vivian, the first truly free decision of her life.

To fill the gap, Beldam recruits Doopliss (Rumpel in French), a shape-shifting impostor, to rebuild a trio for show. But the spell is broken: without her scapegoat, the witch's grip slowly falters.

In a rare turn for a Mario series antagonist, Beldam goes through a genuine redemption. After the final defeat, she gives up her cruelty and offers her apologies to Vivian, promising never to mistreat her again. The mastermind of the shadows is finally caught up by her own conscience.

Why Beldam leaves a lasting mark

In a universe dominated by a larger-than-life Bowser, Beldam stands apart: she is a cerebral antagonist, patient and cold, whose intelligence gives the plot all its flavour. She embodies an archetype rare at Nintendo: the puppet mistress who wins without ever raising her voice.

Her cruelty toward Vivian also gives the youngest sister one of the most moving arcs in the series, celebrated by fans long beyond the original release. The harm the eldest inflicts makes the youngest sister's emancipation shine all the brighter.

Long out of the spotlight after The Thousand-Year Door, Beldam returned to centre stage with the 2024 Nintendo Switch remake, which introduced her to a new generation of players. The true mastermind in the shadows, she remains one of the best-written villains in the whole Paper Mario universe.
