Nastasia: Count Bleck's hypnotic secretary

CharacterSuper Paper MarioCount Bleck
The one minion in the game you never fight — and by far the most dangerous. Nastasia is Count Bleck's right hand: horn-rimmed glasses, magenta bun and a hypnotic power that handed the count half his army. This portrait breaks down her method, the takeover of Luigi, her status as an antagonist you never battle, and the feelings she will never admit to.
In Super Paper Mario, every lieutenant of Count Bleck ends up crossing swords with Mario. All but one. Nastasia makes it through the entire adventure without ever being given a single fight.
That is not a weakness: it is a position. Where the others strike, she recruits — and most of the count's army passed through her glasses.

Count Bleck's right hand
Nastasia holds a role alongside Count Bleck that the game owns completely: she is his secretary. She keeps his schedule, relays his orders and makes sure operations run on time.
Her look follows the same office logic: blue skin, magenta hair pulled into a severe bun, a tailored suit, and above all a pair of horn-rimmed glasses that never leave her face.
She almost always wears a neutral expression. The game grants her emotion only in the rare moments when she finds herself alone with her master.

Hypnosis that leaves no choice
Her power is simple to describe and brutal to be on the wrong end of. Nastasia lifts her glasses, a white flash sweeps across the screen, and the victim is surrounded by checkerboard lasers that bring them under her control.
- She can hold several minds at once under her thumb.
- Her victims carry out orders they would refuse in their right mind.
- The hold sometimes leaves physical marks: hypnotized Koopa Troopas sport black glasses and a spiked collar.
The method is not foolproof, though. Princess Peach resists it during the wedding ceremony, proof that a firm enough will can hold out.

Luigi, the catch with the heaviest consequences
Her most striking catch remains Luigi. Once hypnotized, Mario's brother does not just switch sides: he changes identity.
He becomes Mr. L, the Green Thunder, an enemy who fights his own friends without recognizing them. It is the hardest blow struck against the heroes, and it is entirely Nastasia's doing.
The chilling detail: the hypnosis does not build a will-less puppet. It builds a character convinced he is himself, with his own lines, his own pride and his own style.
The one minion you never fight
Unlike the rest of the inner circle, Nastasia is never a boss. No fight is devoted to her, neither at the castle nor in the dimensions Mario travels through.
That writing choice puts her in a class of her own: she is not an obstacle to clear but an administrative cog in the count's enterprise. O'Chunks fights, Dimentio schemes; she organizes.
The paradox is complete: the minion who looks the most harmless is the one who supplied the count with most of his troops.
Blumiere, Timpani and a love that stays unspoken
Nastasia is the only one the count has told about his past: his former identity as Blumiere and the lost love that drove him to want to erase every world.
That leaves her in an impossible position. She disapproves of the plan, wants him to close the rift and become who he once was again — but her loyalty forbids her from leaving.
The game lets the rest show through: feelings she will never voice, and the clear-eyed knowledge that she will replace no one. After the adventure, she admits she understands, better than anyone, what Blumiere went through.

Iron discipline over the rest of the guard
With the other minions, Nastasia embodies the discipline. She is the one who hands out the administrative punishments, like that thousand-page report demanded of O'Chunks after a failure against Mario.
Strict, but not indifferent: the game takes care to show that she cares about them, in her gruff, by-the-book way.
The way she talks completes the portrait. In the English version, she piles on casual shorthand straight out of the office, while the Japanese version has her speak in a distinctly more professional register.
