Bubblaine, the pearl of the Côte d'Azur

The Seaside Kingdom is the coastal kingdom of Super Mario Odyssey, a canvas of turquoise cliffs, golden sand and crystal-clear water openly inspired by the Côte d'Azur and the Riviera.

Its central area is the seaside resort of Bubblaine, an upmarket holiday spot where visitors come to bask in the sun and savour the house speciality.

The locals here are the Bubblainians, friendly snails wearing berets who give the kingdom its easy-going Mediterranean charm.

Right in the middle of the bay stands the Glass Palace, crowned by its imposing Glass Tower: a landmark you can spot from any corner of the map, and the guiding thread running through the entire level.

Sparkling water, the elixir of good fortune

The great pride of the Seaside Kingdom is its sparkling water, nicknamed the “ exquisite elixir ”: a fizzy drink of legendary finesse.

This elixir is said to bring luck, happiness and even love to whoever drinks it, which makes it the undisputed star of the wedding ceremonies held at the resort.

Making it is a small feat of engineering: the four fountains of Bubblaine spray seawater towards the Glass Tower.

There, the water is carbonated and then perfected until it takes on that flavour at once intense, light and refined that built the kingdom's reputation.

When the fountains are blocked and the tower runs dry, the entire tourist appeal of Bubblaine collapses: hence the urgency of settling the score with the troublemaker.

Bombopode, tyrant of the Glass Tower

The resort's peace is shattered by Bombopode, who goes by the pompous title of Bombopode, Duke of Bubblaine.

This giant, impeccably dressed octopus — a supersized Gushen (the water-spouting species) — sets up shop at the top of the Glass Tower and drinks up every drop of sparkling water through a curly straw, sending the holidaymakers packing.

To take him on, Mario has to capture a Gushen with the help of Cappy: he can then fire powerful jets of water that let him rise into the air and strike back.

The fight unfolds over several phases in which the sea monarch showers the arena with projectiles and waves; you have to aim for his weak points between dodges to free the Glass Tower at last.

Maw-Rays and the Sphynx, guardians of the depths

Below the surface, the Seaside Kingdom is home to far less welcoming creatures. The Maw-Rays (the eels known as Mordrène in the French version) are gigantic moray eels lurking in the underwater caves, especially in the tunnel leading to the lighthouse.

Motionless until the very last second, they shoot out of their holes like coiled springs to snap their jaws shut, then pull back as fast as they appeared — a plume of sand often gives away the attack to come.

More enigmatic still, the Sphynx, that huge riddle-loving statue, watches over an underwater chest that only opens once you have solved its riddle.

Here, the right answer is none other than “ Bubblaine ”, the name of the resort; the sharp-eyed player then walks away with a precious Power Moon hidden on the seabed.

73 Power Moons to track down

Like every kingdom in Odyssey, the Seaside Kingdom is above all a huge playground for Power Moon hunting.

There are 73 in total, making it one of the most generous kingdoms in the game, but just 10 of them are enough to recharge the Odyssey and set course for the next kingdom.

Between the golden rings to swim through on a single breath, the chests hidden beneath the temples and the many capture challenges, there is more than enough here to keep completionists busy for hours.

It is this abundance, combined with its sunny, fairy-tale atmosphere, that makes the Seaside Kingdom one of the most memorable seaside levels in Mario's entire career.

Underwater exploration, the kingdom's signature

The Seaside Kingdom is one of the few kingdoms in Odyssey to offer such vast free-swimming areas beneath the surface.

Mario can dive down on a single breath, skim along the reefs and slip into submerged caves where chests, coins and Moons await him.

Strings of golden rings mark out the seabed: swimming through them in the right order triggers the appearance of hidden rewards.

Once Bombopode is beaten, the fountains unclog, the sparkling water flows again and the resort regains all its effervescence — in every sense of the word.
