Who is King Olly?
King Olly is an origami figure gifted with consciousness, ruler of the fearsome army of the Folded Soldiers. He presents himself as the rightful king destined to rule the Mushroom Kingdom, even if it means forcibly “folding” every paper inhabitant he comes across, starting with the Toads.
Physically, he stands out for his angular folded-paper silhouette and his origami crown. His strength lies not in any obvious brute power, but in his mastery of a forbidden art: the Fold of Life, the very technique that gave him life. He is the one who sets the game's entire adventure in motion by wrapping Princess Peach's castle in five coloured streamers and carrying it to the top of a volcano.

Tragic origins: the creator's misunderstanding
King Olly was not born evil. He was shaped by an origami craftsman during a festival, out of a paper castle meant for the Toads. Unsatisfied with his work, the craftsman used the Fold of Life (Fold of Life), a forbidden technique, to grant him consciousness.
On Olly's body, the craftsman wrote a heartfelt message, wishing that he would become a great king, just and kind. But Olly, unable to read it properly, saw nothing more than a careless scribble. Hurt, convinced that his creator had scorned him, he turned against him, sealed him inside a wall and nursed a stubborn hatred of every flat-paper being, especially the Toads, whom he saw as interchangeable. The character's whole tragedy rests on that devastating misunderstanding.
Olivia: the radiant sister born from his own hands
A fact that often goes unnoticed: Olly himself gave life to Olivia, his little sister, using the Fold of Life. He designed her to reign at his side as origami queen. But Olivia, sparkling and kind-hearted, flatly refused that vision.
Convinced that origami and flat paper can live together in peace, she stood up to her brother. In retaliation, Olly locked her away. Once freed, she becomes Mario's faithful travelling companion throughout the adventure. That brother-and-sister bond, made of love, misunderstanding and sacrifice, is the true emotional heart of The Origami King.
The Folded Soldiers and the thousand-crane plan
To secure his reign, King Olly founds the army of the Folded Soldiers, made up of origami figures and folded Toads forced into all sorts of shapes. Above all, he unfurls five coloured streamers — red, blue, yellow, purple and green — that wrap around Peach's castle. Mario and Olivia have to follow each of these streamers back to its source in order to undo them.
But Olly's ultimate goal is more chilling still: the thousand-crane plan. In origami, folding a thousand cranes is said to grant a wish. Olly has already folded 999 and intends to use Mario as the thousandth crane to make his wish come true: reducing every Toad to a plain blank sheet of paper, erasing their individuality.
The final showdown and a heartbreaking ending
The final battle pits Mario against a King Olly with several fearsome forms, calling on elemental powers, then a hand-to-hand struggle alongside (and against) Bowser, before a confrontation of titanic scale. Defeated and dying, Olly finally understands the truth: his creator's message was not an insult, but a wish made out of love.
Consumed by remorse, he asks Olivia to fold him herself so that he becomes the thousandth crane, handing his sister the right to make the final wish. Olivia then wishes to undo every origami folded by Olly, freeing Peach, her castle and the kingdom. But since she too was created by him, that wish erases her own existence as well. A conclusion of rare melancholy for a Mario game.

His place in the Paper Mario universe
King Olly joins the gallery of the great “tragic” villains of the Paper Mario series, alongside Count Bleck, that antagonist whose cruelty masks a deep pain. He perfectly embodies the saga's identity: a colourful, humorous tone that conceals surprisingly adult themes — abandonment, misunderstanding, forgiveness and sacrifice.
A recent and memorable villain, he has won the community over for good thanks to the depth of his writing. He remains to this day one of the series' great Nintendo Switch roles, and an essential figure for anyone who loves origami and the Mario universe.
