The Kong Family's carnival showman

Swanky has neither the strength of Donkey Kong, nor the agility of Diddy. His specialty lies elsewhere: he's a showbiz entrepreneur, a host who sets up attractions and charges admission.

He thus joins the little band of non-playable Kongs who populate the game maps — alongside Funky the mechanic and Candy — each running their own shop.

His role says a lot about the design thinking of the era: between two perilous levels, the series carved out stopping points where you spent your coins on optional services rather than on pure progression.

A quiz to win extra lives

His first business is a quiz game. In the second installment of Donkey Kong Country, he sets up his stand and invites the heroes to test their knowledge of the game itself.

The clever twist lies in the opponent: you aren't up against the machine but Cranky Kong himself, dead set on proving that the old-timers are worth more than the youngsters.

Prizes range from banana bunches to special coins. The booth becomes one of the rare places in the game where you face another Kong in a test of pure skill, without a single enemy on screen.

A wardrobe that changes everything

Few characters in the series have changed looks so drastically. In his debut, Swanky sports an afro and a blue TV-host jacket, in a distinctly 1970s style.

The next installment transforms him: he grows taller, swaps the afro for a bowler hat, slips into a sharp suit and picks up a cane. The TV host becomes a circus ringmaster.

This radical change makes him a textbook case of redesign at Rare, just like the one Tiny Kong went through years later. The character stays recognizable through his role, never through his silhouette.

Scarce on screens, present at the movies

After the 16-bit era, Swanky keeps a very low profile. He doesn't appear in the modern platform installments, which long made him one of the most forgotten Kongs in the clan.

Yet he resurfaces where nobody expected him: as a spirit in the latest Super Smash Bros., then as a cameo in the Super Mario Bros. movie released in 2023.

This big-screen appearance marks his first presence in a Super Mario-branded production, and his most visible comeback in decades. Proof that a showman, however long he has been shelved, always finds a stage again.
