What is Wiggler?
Wiggler (ハナチャン, Hanachan in Japan, literally “little flower”) is a caterpillar-type creature: a segmented yellow body, a big nose, puffy cheeks, a pair of little boots on every segment and a white flower planted on its head. Left in peace, it ambles along quietly, without a hint of aggression.
But woe betide anyone who provokes it! Jumping on it or touching its flower unleashes its rage: it turns bright red, puffs out steam and starts charging at full speed. That contrast between gentleness and fury has become its trademark, just like other cult enemies such as the Piranha Plants or the Thwomp.
From the Forest of Illusion to today
Wiggler makes its first appearance in Super Mario World (Super Nintendo), released in Japan in 1990 and in the West in 1991, where you run into it in the famous Forest of Illusion. It has been a regular of the saga ever since, crossing one console generation after another.
It turns up in a long list of games: Super Mario 64 (1996), Super Mario Sunshine (2002), Super Mario Galaxy (2007), the New Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Odyssey (2017), and even Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023) and Super Mario Party Jamboree (2024), not forgetting the spin-offs of the Mario Kart.
Enemy, boss, ally… or mount
What makes Wiggler so endearing is the sheer variety of its roles. Usually a simple run-of-the-mill enemy, it becomes a full-blown boss in Super Mario 64, on Tiny-Huge Island, furious that its home has been flooded — you beat it by jumping on its head three times. In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the Racing Wiggler becomes, on the contrary, a friendly ally that you take on in good-natured races.
It even doubles as an mount now and then (in New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U, you walk on the backs of giant Wigglers to cross the poisoned water) and becomes a playable character in its own right in Mario Kart 7 (2011) and then in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Quite a career for a humble caterpillar.
The variants and the adult form Flutter
Over the games, Wiggler has come in several versions: the Mega Wiggler, a giant variant; the Tropical Wiggler from Super Mario Odyssey, with its stretchy body, which Mario can capture with Cappy to cross pools of poison; or the roller-skating Racing Wiggler from Wonder.
But its most fascinating transformation is still Flutter (Papillette in French): the Wiggler's winged adult form, in other words its butterfly stage.
