Among all the minions of Bowser, few enemies have made players sweat as much as the Hammer Bro . This helmeted Koopa, standing upright on two legs and armed with a seemingly endless supply of hammers, has embodied the elite soldier of the Koopa army since 1985: the one you dread spotting around a corner of a level.

A striking debut in Super Mario Bros. (1985)

Hammer Bro shows up as early as Super Mario Bros. (1985) on NES, where his design is credited to programmer Kazuaki Morita. Unlike Goombas and ordinary Koopas, which simply walk forward, he is one of the game's rare truly "active" enemies: he stands upright, jumps as high as Mario and pelts the hero with hammers that trace wide arcs.

In that first game you run into 20 Hammer Bros spread across worlds 3, 5, 7 and 8, often posted in pairs on stacked rows of Brick Blocks. They keep their distance at first, but they end up advancing on any player who stalls too long. Each Hammer Bro you defeat is worth 1,000 points — a reward worthy of the danger, because getting past a duo without a Fire Flower is already quite a feat for a beginner.

Super Mario Bros. 3: the birth of a family

Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988 in Japan) marks a turning point. Hammer Bros take on a new look — yellow skin and black shell — and completely change roles: instead of patrolling the levels, 19 of them roam the world maps themselves, forcing Mario into dedicated showdowns he walks away from with a treasure chest.

This is also the game that founds the family, introducing in one go three variants: the Boomerang Bro, the Fire Bro and the colossal Sledge Bro (six of them in the entire game). Icing on the cake, Super Mario Bros. 3 hands Mario his tormentors' own weapon: the very rare Hammer Suit (Hammer Suit), which lets him throw hammers in turn and destroy enemies that are normally invulnerable, such as Boos and Thwomps.

A dreaded mini-boss: the thrower's gameplay

Hammer Bro's strength comes from a simple but formidable mix: hammers thrown in high arcs, sometimes flat and far-reaching, sometimes high and close, combined with unpredictable jumps between platforms. There is no fixed pattern to memorise: you have to read his trajectory in real time, slip under a volley or land on him between two hops.

The New Super Mario Bros. (2006) series revives the world-map ambushes from World 5 onwards, in the manner of Super Mario Bros. 3, and the Hammer Bro family settles in for good as a difficulty spike in the 2D games. In the role-playing games Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi, Hammer Bros come back regularly as enemies — and sometimes as allies. As for Super Mario Odyssey (2017), it finally flips the roles: Mario can capture a Hammer Bro by first knocking off his helmet with Cappy, then throwing the cap a second time.

The full family: a tour of the variants

Hammer Bro's success has spawned a whole line of specialised brothers:

  • Boomerang Bro (1988): he throws boomerangs that fly back to him, with a calmer attack rhythm than his elder brother. In Super Mario 3D Land, he can drop a Boomerang Flower once defeated; in Super Mario Galaxy 2, his first appearance in a 3D Mario, Yoshi can even gulp down his boomerangs in mid-air.
  • Fire Bro (1988): a rare enemy in Super Mario Bros. 3, he hurls fireballs like Fire Mario — which he actually spat straight from his mouth in the original game. He shows up a lot in Super Mario 3D World.
  • Ice Bro (first seen in New Super Mario Bros. Wii in 2009): his ice balls hurt you and then trap the player in a block of ice. In Quebec French, he is called "Frère Frigo".
  • Sledge Bro (1988): a hulking version whose landing sends out a shockwave that freezes Mario in place on the ground. Since New Super Mario Bros., he only sets off a quake by deliberately performing a ground pound. In North American French, he becomes "Frère Masse".
  • Flying Hammer Bro (Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brother, Super Mario World, 1990 in Japan): perched on a winged platform that sways through the air, he showers Mario with hammers — and Yoshi cannot swallow him.

To this list you can add one-off spin-offs depending on the game, such as the feline version in Bowser's Fury (2021) or golden and shadowy variants.

From enemy to teammate: Hammer Bro goes playable

Having left such a mark, the hammer thrower ended up switching to the other side of the controller. His first playable appearance dates back to Mario Superstar Baseball (2005), where he is unlocked with Fire Bros and Boomerang Bros serving as colour variants. In Mario Strikers Charged (2007), he plays as an attacking teammate, a great shooter and passer but a poor tackler, and that same year Mario Party 8 makes him an unlockable character.

The big leap comes on 25 March 2020: Hammer Bro makes his driving debut in Mario Kart Tour for the "Hammer Bro Tour", joined by his Boomerang, Fire and Ice brothers. The final crowning came in 2025: he is one of the drivers in Mario Kart World on Switch 2, in the middleweight category.

Trivia and little secrets of the Hammer Bro family

A few facts that even long-time fans often miss:

  • By capturing a Hammer Bro in Super Mario Odyssey, you discover that under his helmet he hides spiky blue hair with yellow tips — the Fire Bro's leans instead towards a pinkish red.
  • Still in Odyssey, the Hammer Bros of the Luncheon Kingdom wear a chef's hat and throw… frying pans.
  • Sledge Bros were long called "Sumo Bros" in the English versions of the early New Super Mario Bros. — a mix-up with the actual Sumo Bros, around since Super Mario World, cleared up only when New Super Mario Bros. U (2012) brought both enemies together in the same game.
  • In his debut in Super Mario Bros. 3, the Sledge Bro was drawn with a runny nose, a detail later dropped but kept in the retro style of Super Mario Maker.
  • In the Japanese manga Super Mario-kun, a Flying Hammer Bro works as a blacksmith and forges specialised hammers.
