His weapon always comes back — and so does he, after a long eclipse. Known in English as Boomerang Bro, this Koopa turns up in Super Mario Bros. 3 in 1988 before vanishing from our screens for years. This profile traces how his look shifted from green to yellow, his place in the Bro family alongside the Hammer Bro and the Fire Bro, and the best ways to counter his returning throw.
In the great brotherhood of warrior Koopas, the Boomerang Bro (Boomerang Bro in English) holds a place of his own: instead of pelting Mario with hammers, he throws boomerangs that come back to him.
The third historic member of the Bro family, after the Hammer Bro and the Fire Bro, this low-key thrower remains one of the rarest enemies in the whole saga.

A Hammer Bro who swaps the hammer for a boomerang
The Boomerang Bro is a direct variant of the Hammer Bro (Hammer Bro), that two-legged Koopa who bombards the plumber from above. The only real difference is his weapon: where his cousin throws hammers, he wields boomerangs that trace a curve before flying back to him.
That single change rewrites the fight for the player. The boomerang does not fly straight like a hammer: it flies out, slows down, then turns around, creating a double threat on the way out and on the way back. Standing behind him is therefore never a guarantee of safety.
Like the rest of the brotherhood, he keeps the stocky build and the shell-shaped helmet typical of the Bros. He hops in place, barely moves around, and packs all of his danger into the unpredictable path of his projectile.

A debut in Super Mario Bros. 3, then a long eclipse
The Boomerang Bro shows up in Super Mario Bros. 3, released on Famicom in 1988 (Japan), then in the West in the early 1990s. His name at the time, “Boomerang Brothers”, already presented him as a member of the Bro family.
In that game, you mostly run into him in the desert levels, where he behaves like a green Hammer Bro throwing several boomerangs in a row. Then, something rare for a Mario enemy, he all but disappears from the series.
You have to wait for New Super Mario Bros. in 2006 to really see him at work again, nearly eighteen years later. That long absence partly explains why, even today, he remains a far less familiar opponent than the Hammer Bro.
From green to yellow: how his look evolved
Originally, the Boomerang Bro sported green skin on screen, dictated by the technical limits of the NES, which told the Bros apart by color rather than by weapon. The very first illustrations even gave him orange skin and a dark shell.
The turning point comes with Mario Superstar Baseball (2005), which locks in his modern look: yellow skin, with blue shell, helmet and shoes. Most later games have kept that palette, which has become his true visual signature.
That blue color code sets him apart instantly from the Hammer Bro (often green) and the Fire Bro (red and orange). At a single glance, the shade of the shell announces the type of projectile the player is about to face.
The Bro family: Hammer, Fire and the others
The Boomerang Bro belongs to the wide Bro family, a set of warrior Koopas all built on the same model as the Hammer Bro. Historically, he is its third member, after the hammer and the fire.
- The Hammer Bro (Hammer Bro): the hammer-throwing elder, present as early as Super Mario Bros. in 1985.
- The Fire Bro (Fire Bro): the one who spits fireballs, another regular of Super Mario Bros. 3.
- The Boomerang Bro: the thrower of returning boomerangs, the quiet star of the brotherhood.
The family later grew with newer variants, such as the ice thrower and a far heavier cousin, known by their English names Ice Bro and Sledge Bro. They all share the same stance and the same arcing throw, but each one is defined by its weapon of choice.
The Boomerang Flower: when an enemy inspires a power-up
The Boomerang Bro's most lasting contribution to the Mario universe is not an enemy, but a power-up. His attack directly inspired the Boomerang Flower (Boomerang Flower), an item introduced in Super Mario 3D Land in 2011.
Pick up this boomerang-shaped flower and Mario turns into Boomerang Mario: dressed in an outfit that echoes the Bros', he can then throw a boomerang that comes back, sweeping up coins and enemies along the way.
The reversal is delicious: for more than twenty years, that projectile was an enemy weapon and a feared one, before becoming an asset in the hero's hands. The power-up has since returned in Super Mario 3D World, extending the legacy of this otherwise very discreet Bro.
A rare enemy with an unforgettable signature
Despite how far back he goes, the Boomerang Bro remains a rare enemy. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, for instance, you meet only two of them in the entire game, which almost makes him a curiosity to hunt down.
That rarity feeds his status as a secondary yet cult member of the bestiary. He shows up in small touches in recent entries, from the New Super Mario Bros. games to Super Mario 3D World, without ever reaching the omnipresence of the Hammer Bro.
Maybe that is exactly his charm: the Boomerang Bro is the enemy you recognize instantly but rarely run into, that blue and yellow boomerang that always comes back, just like him, when you least expect it.
