The only real difference lies in the red color of his gear, helmet and shoes included. That color code is not decorative: in the Mario universe, it announces the creature's specialty. Red, here, is the promise of fire.

The signature of the Fire Bro, it's his flaming projectiles. In Super Mario Bros. 3, he literally spits them out of his mouth, in a wide arc, to trap the plumber from afar without ever leaving his perch.

In more recent installments, the gesture has changed: he now throws his fireballs by hand, exactly the way the Hammer Bro throws his hammers. Depending on the game, he fires in bursts or sends out one big ball that breaks into smaller droplets as it falls, spraying the ground in front of him.

The result is the same: the Fire Bro puts up a curtain of fire that is hard to cross. His habit of hopping on the spot while he shoots makes Mario's life even harder, since you have to aim for his head at exactly the right moment.

A Super Mario Bros. 3 rarity turned regular

The Fire Bro turns up in Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988 in Japan), but as a rare guest: you only run into him in a handful of levels, which made him a small curiosity at the time.

The games that followed pulled him well out of the shadows. In New Super Mario Bros. U, he even becomes the most common type of Hammer Bro in the game, and Super Mario 3D World lines up dozens of them across its levels.

With Super Mario Maker 2, he joins the creators' toolbox in the Super Mario 3D World style. Proof that this little fire-spitter, once a fringe act, is today one of the essential Koopa enemies of the series.

The sprawling Hammer Bro family

The Fire Bro is only one link in a huge family of projectile-throwing Koopas, every one of them descended from the Hammer Bro (Frère Marto in French), who showed up as early as Super Mario Bros. in 1985.

  • The Hammer Bro (Frère Marto) is the eldest: he makes hammers rain down as he hops, and he is the model for all the rest.
  • The Boomerang Bro (Frère Boomerang), also born in Super Mario Bros. 3, sends out boomerangs that fly out and come back to cover more ground.
  • The Sledge Bro (Frère Mastoc) is the heavyweight of the bunch: bigger and heavier, he sets off small earthquakes every time he crashes back down to the ground.
  • The Ice Bro (Frère Cryo), who arrived in New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2009), is the frozen mirror of the Fire Bro: the same moves, but with ice balls.

Together, they form an elemental squad in Bowser's service, where the Fire Bro's flames and the Ice Bro's frost answer each other like two sides of the same coin.

How to take down a Fire Bro

Facing a Fire Bro, the good old stomp on the head still works, as long as you aim between two bursts of fire. An enemy that hops is far easier to flatten just after he has landed.

The offensive items dispatch him with ease: a green shell skidded along the ground, or a fireball from Mario earned with the Fire Flower, knock him out in a single hit.

A delicious little irony: the fire-spitter is not immune to Mario's fire. His red shell shields him from the scenery, not from the plumber's projectiles, which knock him over just as fast as any other Koopa.

The Fire Bro beyond the platformers

The Fire Bro has spread far beyond the platform games. You will find him in the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi RPGs, where he becomes a turn-based battle opponent with fire attacks that really sting.

He also drops in on the sports and racing side, from the Mario Baseball to Mario Kart Tour, sometimes trading the flames for a bat or a steering wheel. That sheer ubiquity proves the little firestarting Koopa has earned his stripes as a familiar face in the Mario galaxy.

From a rare, throwaway enemy back in 1988, the Fire Bro has grown into a dependable regular: not a headliner, but an indispensable supporting act that players recognize from the very first spit of fire.
