BossKoopalingsSuper Mario Bros. 3
A boss the size of a Toad, who never gets off his ball. Rainbow mohawk, cross-eyed stare and a permanent circus act: Lemmy Koopa is the smallest of the Koopalings. This portrait details his tribute to Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmister, his magic ball, his doubles springing out of the Warp Pipes in Super Mario World and his profile as the lightest driver in Mario Kart 8.
He is no taller than a Toad, he is permanently cross-eyed and he refuses to set foot on the ground: Lemmy Koopa is by far the smallest and the most offbeat of the seven lieutenants of Bowser.
His multicolored mohawk — yellow, magenta and cyan strands ending in a ponytail — and his magic ball make him the most unusual Koopaling of the bunch. Portrait of the family's tightrope walker.

The smallest lieutenant in the Koopa army
Lemmy is officially the smallest of the Koopalings, barely taller than a Toad. In a group that includes the colossal Morton, the size gap is spectacular — and the design owns it completely.
His look piles on the distinctive touches: a mohawk crest striped with yellow, magenta and cyan that trails off into a ponytail, cross-eyed pupils, an orange shell. No other member of the Koopalings is anywhere near this garish.
Where his brothers play the tyrant, Lemmy cultivates the image of a circus performer. He is readily nicknamed the clown of the family: he seems far busier with his act than with conquering the Mushroom Kingdom.

Lemmy Kilmister, heavy metal godfather
His name pays tribute to Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister, founder and singer of the British heavy metal band Motörhead. The man behind the choice explained it plainly: the character reminded him of someone who would always do exactly as he pleased.
It would be hard to sum the Koopaling up better: Lemmy is the one who goes off script, who would rather juggle than obey, and whose fights look more like a show than a battle.
As with the rest of the family — and as with the Reznor —, this musical reference is a Western invention, absent from the original Japanese version.
The magic ball, a circus act turned game mechanic
Lemmy's most recognizable feature is his magic ball, on which he keeps his balance at all times. It is no mere decorative prop: it is the axis of his entire gameplay.
- He rolls on his sphere instead of walking, which makes his movements slippery and unpredictable.
- He conjures up other balls that bounce around the arena to flood the space.
- The modern entries set him on floors that are icy or moving, where his balance becomes an advantage and Mario's a handicap.
This idea of a boss who never touches the ground remains unique in the series' bestiary, even next to the most inventive fortress guardians.

Ice Land, Warp Pipes and lookalikes
In Super Mario Bros. 3, Lemmy seizes the wand of Ice Land — a slippery stage tailor-made for a character perched on a ball. The fight comes down to knocking him off his sphere while he hurls more of them.
In Super Mario World, he defends the castle of Vanilla Dome and pulls the same trick as Wendy: he springs out of Warp Pipes flanked by doubles, and you have to pick out the real one among the copies.
These two fights lock in his register for good: Lemmy never wins through strength, but through imbalance — that of the floor, that of his gaze, that of the player's attention.
The lightest driver on the grid
In Mario Kart 8, Lemmy earns a rare distinction: he is the lightest driver in the whole game. Acceleration and handling maxed out, top speed and weight at rock bottom — the profile of a specialist that technical players adopted in no time.
This absolute featherweight status has handed him a second career no one saw coming: long a bit player in the 2D games, he has become a recognized strategic pick out on the tracks.
Of all the Koopalings, Lemmy is thus the one who best turned his oddity into an asset — small size and precarious balance making, in the end, an excellent driver.
