Queen Bean, ruler of the Beanbean Kingdom

In Superstar Saga, Queen Bean rules over the Beanbean Kingdom , the land bordering the Mushroom Kingdom where the adventure takes place. An imposing ruler with purple hair and an orange dress, she embodies the benevolent authority of an entire people of Beanbeanians.

Her kingdom is home to a coveted treasure: the Beanstar , a magical star able to grant the wishes of anyone who awakens it with a pure voice. That very treasure is what makes the queen the first victim of the plot hatched by Cackletta.

Cackletta's plot and the Belly Blech worm

Cackletta , the witch who threatens the kingdom, cannot awaken the Beanstar because her voice is far too ugly. Her plan is simple: neutralize the queen, then steal the artifact. With her loyal minion Fawful , she sneaks into the castle.

There, she forces Queen Bean to swallow a Belly Blech worm . This parasite multiplies its victim's strength, size and muscle mass tenfold, but plunges her into a blind rage that drives her to strike anything that moves. Turned into an uncontrollable monster, the queen lets Cackletta steal the Beanstar with total impunity.

The fight against the enraged queen

Mario and Luigi face the transformed queen in the heart of Beanbean Castle. This boss cannot be tackled head-on: you first have to aim at and take out her two arms, which shield the rest of her body and normally absorb jump attacks.

Once the arms are out of commission, her crown eventually falls off: the queen then becomes vulnerable to jump attacks aimed at her head. Watch out, though, because arms and crown regenerate in cycles, forcing the brothers to repeat the maneuver several times.

Between phases, the ruler unleashes powerful shockwaves across the ground that you have to dodge by jumping at just the right moment. Here, patience and timing count for far more than brute force, in the purest tradition of the series' turn-based battles.

The Chuckola Reserve, cure for the curse

Beating the queen is not enough: you then have to cure her. The remedy is a legendary soda, the Chuckola Reserve , a stash of cola hidden deep in the kingdom's woods. The brothers must set off in search of this rare brew if they hope to drive the parasite out.

Once the Chuckola Reserve has been administered, the queen spits the Belly Blech worm back out, and it promptly scurries away. She returns to her normal size and appearance, rid of Cackletta's curse. The scene, spectacular and slapstick at once, closes one of the game's first great moments.

A kind and comical queen

Back to her old self, Queen Bean shows her true colors: a warm, grateful monarch, deeply loved by her people. She lends the Mario brothers a hand for the rest of their quest to recover the Beanstar.

The character also cultivates a comical and regal side: her imposing silhouette, her grotesque transformation and her return to dignity make her a memorable figure of the Beanbean Kingdom. She even turns up again as a photo in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, tucked inside an item-trading quest, a nod to fans of the series.

Born in 2003 on Game Boy Advance, Queen Bean returned to screens in the 2017 3DS remake, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, which let a whole new generation of players rediscover her delicious misadventure.
