A neighbouring bean-shaped kingdom with rulers all its own. Known in English as the Beanbean Kingdom, this land is the setting of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga on Game Boy Advance in 2003, re-released on 3DS in 2017. This guide covers its comedy-soaked geography, its Beanish people, Queen Bean, Prince Peasley and the coveted Beanstar.

When Mario and Luigi leave the Mushroom Kingdom aboard the airship of Bowser, they land in a completely new world: the Beanbean Kingdom (Beanbean Kingdom in English). It is the backdrop of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (Game Boy Advance, 2003), the first entry in the RPG series developed by AlphaDream, and the first neighbouring kingdom you can explore in full outside Peach's own lands.

Where the Mushroom Kingdom runs on mushrooms, the Beanbean Kingdom revolves around beans, peas and, above all, laughter: its places, its people and its treasures all draw on the same absurd, vegetal humour. Here is the guided tour of a land as strange as it is endearing.

A kingdom next door to the Mushroom Kingdom

The Beanbean Kingdom shares its north-eastern border with the Mushroom Kingdom: it is a sovereign nation with its own queen, its own army and its own culture. Its motif is no longer the mushroom but the bean and the pea, carried right down to the place names.

The story kicks off when an envoy from the Beanbean Kingdom steals the voice of Princess Peach and turns it into an explosive one. Mario, Luigi and Bowser board the Koopa Cruiser to get it back, but sabotage in mid-flight sends the ship crashing at the border: the brothers are separated from Bowser and dropped right into the heart of the Beanbean Kingdom. The stage is set for the very first great adventure outside the Mushroom Kingdom.

A geography full of humour

The Beanbean Kingdom packs a remarkable variety of landscapes for a Game Boy Advance game: barren mountains, dark forests, desert and lagoons. The most striking places:

• Beanbean Castle Town: the capital, buzzing with locals and shops, watched over by the royal castle.
• Hoohoo Mountain: the rocky massif in the north-west, looming over Hoohoo Village, the Mario brothers' first major stop.
• Chucklehuck Woods: a dark forest in the south-west where the fruit used to brew a famous soda grows.
• Teehee Valley: a desert valley that was once a seabed teeming with fish.
• Woohoo Hooniversity: the kingdom's prestigious university, devoted to the study of laughter.

Add to that more remote areas such as Kusu Island, the Guffawha Ruins and Joke's End, the ice palace at the very end of the adventure.

The Beanish, a people shaped like beans

The kingdom's inhabitants, the Beanish, are creatures that call to mind beans and peas: born of the "Bean Tribe", they fill here the role the Toads play in the Mushroom Kingdom. You come across them strolling about, running shops or doing small favours for the plumber brothers.

That vegetal identity turns up everywhere: the kingdom is "named after onomatopoeias of laughter", and one of its flagship products is Chuckola Cola, a drink brewed from the fruit of Chucklehuck Woods, at the brewery castle a short way from the capital. Drinking and laughing are, quite literally, matters of state in the Beanbean Kingdom.

Queen Bean and Prince Peasley

The Beanbean Kingdom is a monarchy ruled by Queen Bean (Queen Bean), supported by her lady-in-waiting Lady Lima. She welcomes Mario and Luigi and backs their quest, before falling victim herself to a spell that warps her appearance: freeing her is one of the great moments of the adventure.

Here, Queen Bean rules, until Cackletta's plot and the Chuckola worm drive her into a rage.

Her son, Prince Peasley (Prince Peasley), is a blond hero with a red cape and a slender sword, as stylish as he is effective. Before the game begins, he had been turned into a monster and sealed inside an egg at the top of one of the kingdom's mountains. Once freed, he becomes a valuable ally, popping up regularly to lend the Mario brothers a hand. The Beanbean royal family sums up the tone of the kingdom all on its own: noble, yet always tinged with eccentricity.

The heir to the throne, Prince Peasley, blends fairy-tale swagger with rock-star ego, right up to the curse that turns him into Dragohoho.

The Beanstar, the kingdom's coveted treasure

The great treasure of the Beanbean Kingdom is the Beanstar (Beanstar), a legendary artefact able to grant wishes… provided it is awakened by a perfectly pure voice. That is exactly why Peach's voice was stolen: the game's villains intend to use it to manipulate the Beanstar and seize control of the kingdom.

The plan tips into chaos when, in the basement of Woohoo Hooniversity, the voice ringing out exasperates the Beanstar so much that it bursts through the ceiling, carrying off Mario, Luigi and the thief Popple (Popple) before shattering into four pieces scattered across the kingdom. Recovering those shards becomes one of the main goals of the second half of the adventure, making the Beanstar the true beating heart of the kingdom's lore.

Popple, a masked Beanish crook who talks like a movie gangster, pursues here his eternal quest for a "Rookie" to recruit.

A kingdom that appears only once

A rare thing for a Mario location: the Beanbean Kingdom has appeared in a single game only, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and its Nintendo 3DS remake Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions (2017). The latter retells the story exactly while adding a brand-new mode, "Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser", centred on Bowser's troops.

That exclusivity feeds the kingdom's cult status among fans: no sequel, no return in later entries, just a unique setting that launched the whole Mario & Luigi RPG series, itself the third great line of Mario RPGs after Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario. A vegetal one-shot that became unforgettable.
