A new-generation 2D Mario level editor
Super Mario Maker 2 is the direct sequel to Super Mario Maker, released on Wii U in 2015. Where the first game laid the foundations of the editor, this Switch version widens the field of possibilities enormously.
The idea stays crystal clear: you build 2D Mario levels piece by piece, then share them online so players all over the world can try them. The other way round, you can download and play an endless supply of creations dreamed up by the community, from the gentle stroll to the most fiendish trap.

Five game styles, including the all-new Super Mario 3D World
Every level is built in one of the saga's five graphic styles: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U and, for the first time, Super Mario 3D World. Switching style instantly changes the look, the physics and the sounds of the stage.
This Super Mario 3D World style is the big newcomer, missing from the first game. It runs on its own terms, with elements all its own: the Cat Mario suit for clawing, climbing walls and pouncing on enemies, or the Koopa Troopa Car that lets you tear through a stage at full speed.

A solo Story Mode to rebuild Peach's castle
Sorely missing from the first game, a genuine solo adventure makes its entrance here: Story Mode. It lines up more than a hundred levels designed entirely by Nintendo, a perfect showcase of everything the editor allows.
The premise is a treat: Princess Peach's castle has just been built when a Reset Rocket accidentally wipes it out. Mario then has to pile up coins level after level to fund the works and rebuild the castle piece by piece.
A far richer toolbox for creating
On the design side, the toolkit grows noticeably. In come the slopes, available at last to slide down or climb, the snake blocks that follow a path you trace yourself, plus seesaws and swings for passages that are all about balance.
The mood can be tuned too: a brand-new forest theme joins the settings, a day/night cycle can turn a stage's rules upside down — gravity, enemies, visibility — and you can even set the water or lava level, and make it rise and fall.
Released in 2022, Mario Strikers: Battle League revives the series' football fifteen years on, with no rules whatsoever and its Hyper Strikes.
Creator's tip: the clear conditions, there from day one, set a precise goal — finish without stomping a single enemy, collect a given number of coins — far beyond simply reaching the flag.
Creating and playing together
The experience doesn't stop at solo play. The game offers local and online multiplayer, cooperative or competitive, for up to four players, on levels drawn at random or hand-picked.
More original still, you can build a level with someone else by splitting the design work between you. Good to know: the online features — sharing, downloading and multiplayer matches — call for a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online.
Free updates that changed everything
The game's real strength is how it kept growing for free after launch. The 2.0 update, on December 5, 2019, slipped the Master Sword into the Super Mario Bros. style: grab it and Mario turns into Link, gaining sword, bow and bombs, just like the Zelda of old.
The 3.0 update, on April 22, 2020, crowned it all with the World Maker mode, which strings several levels together into a complete world — up to eight worlds and forty stages. It also added new power-ups and brought the Koopalings in among the playable bosses.
